Title: Help !!! mk2 gti 8v wont turn over
Post by: jordanmk2gti on 16 October 2013, 14:57
Okay im new to the forum so hi, ive got a mk2 golf gti that has been a project to get it on the road was running fine when I got it etc etc gave it a full service for mot and it failed due to having holes in the footwells (pinpricks) so I welded the holes up using a mig welder , disconnected the battery but earthed on the chassis thinking it wouldnt be a problem . Now it wont start fuel pump primes but no ignition, I have changed on it :blue temp sensor, coils, ht leads, spark plugs, distributo cap andd rotor arm, ignition module , new battery. Only thing I thought it could be was ECU or I need a whole new distributor , currently look for a diagnostic port to see if I can get a computer to source the problem but its not under the gearlever seat under the dash near fusebox or behind centre console and as I researched further I heard they dont have them even though I thought it was a 2x2 connector. So can anyone help me get her started up again by giving me advice on whether to find the port or other parts that could be malfunctioning? Thanks in advance (sorry for the essay) jordan

I don't think they do have diagnostic ports? I'm willing to be proven wrong though.
When you say the fuel pump primes, does it keep running or prime for 2 or so seconds then stop? If it runs constantly before you turn the key that is a sign that the ecu has fried. Other than that check all fuses and relays (especially 18 i think it is) are ok and seated properly and all connections to the starter motor are sound, also could it be the ignition switch in the column?

Hi and welcome to the forum.

Does the engine spin over with the turn of the key?

Fuel pump will keep running as long as your turning the key to start it, and batterys fully charged, there is no sound of ignition at all motor doesnt even turn over no revs registered on th counter when attempting to start

Bores are probably full of fuel stopping it from turning over

Take the plugs out to see if it turns over. If you have fuel, (or water ) in the bores it wont turn over.

Have you checked for a corroded connection of the solenoid trigger wire?  Just unplugging and reconnecting it will probably fix it enough to tell you if this is the fault.  It's a non-waterproof connection in a fairly exposed location.

I have not checked for the solenoid trigger wire, when I take plugs out I can see like a bit of fuel , its not hydraulicly seized is it? How would I go about getting the fuel out of the bores? Bought an ecu of the bay of e to fit to see if that helps.matters should arrive wednesday so will update if it works

Check the solenoid connection before you worry about anything else.  It's one of a very few things that can result in the engine not even trying to turn over. Smallest wire going to the starter motor (red with blue or black stripe IIRC), simple 6.3mm spade connector in a plastic housing. Unplug it by pulling the housing. If the spade part on the solenoid is all crusty and dirty, clean it up; then reconnect and try to start it.

Small amounts of fuel will soon evaporate out of the bores if you leave the plugs out.

Again for the solenoid connection. Bridge that spade connection on the starter to the thick power on the starter. Just make sure ignition is on and its in neutral first

Right ill try first thing in the morning before work and let you know how it goes , will it attempt to start if the bores are full of fuel though?

No probably not, it will flood the plugs. Take the plugs out and try the shorting trick. As said, make sure it's in neutral. It should turn. If it does,  it is not getting a feed to the terminal on the starter motor. In that case it could be a bad connection at the terminal or a broken wire somewhere, ignition swtch fault or bad connection on a terminal somewhere on the way. You can only check for a feed back along the circuit with a meter, starting at the starter end. Good luck :undecided:

Why don't you just pull plugs and try starter?
You ve already stated that the pump runs continuously and won't turn over probably because the bores are full of fuel due to the blown ecu.
