Title: Rear view camera is now available as an option again.
Post by: Gnasher on 15 October 2013, 12:39
As per the title really, I checked with VW UK via there facebook page and they confirmed that the rear view camera is now available as an option again.

As I only ordered a week ago, I've rung up and added it to my order!!

If parking sensors come as standard, what does the rear camera add in terms of protecting you from hitting things when parking or manoeuvring. I am trying to figure out why it was so much in demand. What am I missing here??

How much was the camera to add on, btw?

High demand is more than likely due to the low cost of it - £165 is a really good price for it. It's also a great option for actually seeing what is in the way rather than simply knowing something is in the way as you can hear the beeping.

TBH I've added at least 2 (probably 3) options that I'll not really use every day but will more than likely make the car easier to sell later (rear view camera, park assist and high beam assist).

The rest (Performance pack, Vienna leather and Dynaudio) are all for me!!

The rear view camera, my favourite subject

At £165 its cheap and if you have back or neck problems its useful. However, if you dont have any of these ailments then its purely for show. How the hell would people not know whats behind them when they are parking?

Actually, I've been really surprised at how well the RVC sees at night. When I reverse off my driveway at night, my path is surround by high bushes so I can't see anything on the road. The RVC works really well in providing an excellent view of the road just as the ass of the Golf passes out beyond the bushes, and has a nice wide field of view.

I had to reverse my Mk5 at the weekend in a friend's off road parking area behind their flat.  It was really dark and I knew there was a wall behind me but really hard to see with the measly single reversing light/candle.

The camera would've been useful then, but I just opened the door and looked out - sometimes the old fashioned methods are the best.

The gadget loving boy I am deep down inside really wants the camera but doesn't want to jeopardise my build week (next week!) even if it were still possible to change the order.

Wonder what effect adding this would have on my order.... Estimated build week 50.

I ordered my car just as the camera went off-limits for new orders. The dealer agreed that they accepted the order with the camera in it and have agreed to retrofit the camera once they were available again.

Does this mean that the cameras should now be available to the dealer for that work to happen too?

Ha ha, last thing I wanted to do was restart the old "reversing camera" debate again, lol.

It must have been the gadget freak in me that made me order it, your honour!!

As well as the video feed of what is going on behind the car, you also get coloured lines over the picture to indicate the direction of travel as you turn the wheel.  I've survived without one for all these years but having had it less than a week I've already found it useful on a couple of occasions.  Yes it's a gimmic, you don't really need it but I'm glad I have it.

Emailed my dealer about this, turns out he's on holiday.

Emailed my dealer about this, turns out he's on holiday.

Another sales person emailed me back and said it may delay the build by a couple of weeks.

So I added it :)

I added it as well, if it adds a few weeks I'm not too worried, it's going to be a long wait anyway. Good to know it's available again, great post, thanks.

Cheers

The camera is a waste of time and a waste of money. You can easily look in your mirrors or look behind you when you reverse.
Electric windows? How lazy can you get what's up with the good old fashioned wind up mechanism.
Air conditioning? For gods sake, just open the windows.
Keyless entry, surely your having a laugh? In fact remote central locking is for folk with limp wrists who can't even open the doors with keys!! Whats up with individual door locking when only the drivers door opens with the key and you have to manually open all the other doors from the inside?
And don't get me started on city braking, cruise control, ABS etc.

This progression will never catch on!!

The camera can be retrofitted, there's a mention of a UK company in another thread. Only problem is it costs almost £700 to fit.

I've got one on the pool car I've got until my gti arrives. It's the biggest pile of doodah. It's more off putting than assisting. It's not like you're parking a tank! Especially as the golf has a flat back. You'd be better off spending the money on a few refresher driving lessons or even better 165 quid on beer!

I can't see it on the options on the website though, but was thinking of getting a mk7 and have the camera in my mk6 and use it all the time so very interested if it's coming back in.

It's not back on the online configurator but I'm sure it will be soon.

The rear reversing camera shortage was the reason I was given why my car sat from the 12th Sept until the 5th October. Thankfully it's now built and on a boat to the UK!

I made a point of ordering it as I thought it would be useful. Now having got it I'm not so sure, and the whirring noise it makes when it opens the VW badge as you select reverse irritates me a bit.
