Title: need help fixing my heater !
Post by: sammyboy92 on 14 October 2013, 21:49
it started not long after i got the car sometimes the fan would work perfectly and others nothing would work and now typically as the cold weather arrives my heater packs up all together, i was told it will probs be some resistor that is easily replaced and located behind the dials, so after taking the whole centre console out near enough , no resistor could be found , then i was told it could be behind the glove box however i havnt yet got round to searching for it.
has anyone else had the same problem or know how to fix it ? also am i right in thinking this is the part i need  http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/400514492939?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649 ?
any help would be much appreciaetd !

I have a feeling there are two types for mk3 ??? .If i remember correctly it all depends if car has aircon or not.Bump

I would say it may not be the resistor. I would expect it to show other signs it was failing first (usually the heater fan only working on 1 or 2 speeds)

still worth checking though and just remove the glovebox/lower glovebox/shelf and it's next to the heater motor (and green in colour), also check the blower motor itself as these also fail

You checked the actual fan switch on the dash. Pull the knob off and check the contact points have not opened up. Real common issue with the mk3. Failing that it will be the resistor which can be got to be removing glove box or can be located up behind dash at that side. Push the tabs in and it pulls right out of the heater box. That one in your ebay link looks correct.

so ive taken the lower shelf off and found the resistor, so i gave it a tug to try and remove it and the heater came to life , which is a bonus with these cold mornings, however the red wire going into it looks to have melted a little bit, now im no electrician but i know thats not good so ive ordered the replacement anyway:)  thanks for the help guys id never of found it on my own !!
