I'm removing my turbo soon because the previous owner broke a downpipe stud clean off while installing it , found a couple of good guides but there for removing a ko3 to upgrade to a ko3s or ko4, I know it's the pretty much the same process but in both guides they remove the exhaust manifold, can I avoid doin this, is there enough access to the oil/coolant feeds?
Cheers

In a word... No, down pipe needs to come off.
It's a fiddley job with it off too.

Nice one, yeah I'm removing the whole exhaust as I've gotta fit a new catback anyway, so I'll pull the whole downpipe out the way

Sorry i mean exhaust manifold on the block to the turbo, the guide said you don't have to but in the guide he did? :undecided:

Anybody?

Manifold need to come off so you can remove the turbo water&oil lines :)

Found another good guide, can leave the mani in place and slide the turbo down to remove the lines, this is my next Saturday sorted

I tried that once, did not work for me.
If the mani nuts aren't seized it will work out easier taking it off. The 15 mins spent taking it off will save you time trying to manoeuvre the turbo out down by the drive shaft.

Just re-read your initial post. Have you tried just removing the broken stud while turbo is still attached? Or is there not enough of it sticking out to grab on to (Thats what she said).

Ha, no can't really tell until I take the downpipe off, if I can then result, but I'm preparing for the worst, doesn't look like too much of a bad job just fiddly, once the downpipes out the way there should be bags of room :undecided:, just don't want another bolt pinging that's why I want to avoid removing the mani

There's still not a great deal of room once the downpipe is out the way and I could never see how you're meant to get the turbo out from the bottom, I've always removed it from the top

I pulled it from the top in the end, didn't remove the mani though, not a bad job, just fiddly in places, I recommend a friend to help

It might be worth cracking the nuts holding the mani on while everything is out just to make sure they're not seized if you need to take them off in the future. I replaced all of mine with stainless aerotight nuts

I agree with wazzer take it from the top its a pain in the but ov a job but it can be done in a day  just be carefull ov the oil feed pips
