Mk3 golf GTI power chip i just called up a company called power-chip http://www.powerchips.com/ and they said £140 they could fit a chip with an increase of 5 - 8 bhp is this reasonable power for money or just a waste of money.
-
It will smooth the power delivery but will not add much power.
-
I have ported head and throttle body and inlet to match is 5 - 8 bhp realistic gain and ive never dealt with chips before £240 a good price fitted.
-
Is that a custom mapped chip or an off the shelf jobbie mate?
-
A few of us on here run one from this guy on our 16v's ... http://myworld.ebay.co.uk/pepeoi/ and they cost a mere fraction of what you've been quoted. I'm sure i paid about £30 or so for mine on a best offer?
I'm going to get him to sort me out for the mk3 TDI wagon i've just picked up, apparently on those you can squeeze up to 35bhp from chipping alone!
-
Yeh not a mapped chip just a plug and play as it were.

I'd have thought a 5-8 BHP gain is reasonable for the mods you have.
-
He didn't asked about mods i had to be honest the guy on the phone didn't evan seem interested, the conversation lasted only a few minutes with no real info just it needs to be soldiered in and its £240 fitted have to drive about an hour to them not £140 sorry typo.
The chip is just for a standard golf as he mention nothing about what i had done to car exhaust air filter ect.....
My friend has a escort rs200 and he payed £130 and said it was excellent i was hoping some one had dealt with something like this before to get some real info.
-
Rs200 and he bought a chip????
Doubt its a rs200 then

RS2000 Sorry another typo lol
-
He also misinformed you as well as the ABF ecu is socketed meaning the chip simply pushes into place rather then needing soldering like some 8v's.
-
Well like i said he had no interest in selling me this part i did mention my car litre valves ect.. in that case seems he has priced it wrong maybe does any else know of a manufacturer of this sort of chip.
-
Contact the the eBay seller I've linked you to mate.
-
Yes contact the seller mentioned. I use his chip and noticed a nice improvement. I will send you a link from u tube which guides you through how to install it. Very easy with care.
-
i agree with thai, i got my chip for 27 i think it was. for what it cost and the ease of it i would defiantly go for that option again.

This is what i have found seems to good to be true but if it is a plug and play chip and not a resistor like most companies on eBay and with you lot saying he does good chips i think i will go with this option.
-
Just called a place call RedDot in enfield London who map cars my campy has used them alot for our Alfa Romeo's they have informed me the ABF ECU cannot really be mapped he said i'll be lucky to get 5bhp after paying £250 as the ECU'S go a bit crazy when mapped.
Is this true????
-
I would save up for some schrick cams and a vernier pulley first, best money I have spent on 16v

You won't get 21 BHP but you should get at least 7bhp and a smoother power curve which or the money isn't bad value really.
-
what website would you recommend to purchase from and what sort of price am i looking at for each also what degrees would i need.

Yeh i was thinking that worse case i lose out on £46 instead of £250 i can live with losing £46.
-
There's nowt to lose really, don't even pay the full asking price. Just don't expect to be blown away.
-
yeh i will get what i pay for and that's not a lot but a little increase better than none and at least its not a resistor  and he does have that 'make offer' button whitch i will be using :smug:

Please listen to what people are telling you. The guy off eBay who myself and others have used is all you need for a chip. End of the day it is a 16v not a turbo. It is not going to set your world on fire without spending thousands and thousands.
-
i only rang these gays because my boss is mapping mad and thinks its the only way so i thought just call and get a price i will definitely will be buying the chip off eBay mapping is not a option on the 16v golf it seems.

Resistor?
Eh?
On a petrol car?
They don't work that way...

He's talking crap.
ABFs can be re-mapped very easily with a change of EPROM.
The 5BHP bit is probably accurate though...you'll be lucky to get much more on a standard ABF...maybe a bit more on a ported ABF.
Digifant 3.2 ECUs are perfectly happy with re-mapped EPROMS...what they don't like, is running with big duration/overlap cams where the pulsing in the plenum causes them problems...so cams on a standard ECU are a risky proposition - you need to be VERY careful which cam choice you go for...or they won't run.
-

Mapping IS an option.
You need to find the right person and have the need for it.
You don't have the need frankly...a mildly ported head and TB aren't going to add much anyway, so an ebay chip will be fine.
If you were running high compression, big cams or odd cam combinations, need very specific rev limits or have a seriously modified head, then a custom map will give more gains - but you need to find someone who can map with an emulator, then burn a EPROM to custom parameters.
I know, because I have had that exact work done...so know it can be done.
The bottom line is, youe engine doesn't need or warrant it...so throw in an ebay EPROM and live with the 5BHP or so gain.
-
i have a spare engine i want to get forge and ported and stuff but that's in the future when i can afford it.
For now il stick with ebay plug and play.
-
Just stick with standard cams mate.
-
The resistor is one of those jobs you cut into the lambda sensor, absolutely gash.
I have a Greek chip and soldered it in my ady, worked a treat but did not make it any faster but was worth the 30 it cost.
