I am buying a private plate from someone who i dont know what do i need to do to make sure its all legit he has it on retention and says i just need to pay the transfer fee ( £25) what will i need to do next?
-
the transfer fee is more than 25 i think
have a look at www.dvla-som.co.uk - firstly to check that the reg you want isnt on sale there cheaper, and also should be able to tell you the fee

its norm about £80 to transfer a plate! 25quid.. i wish! lost me plate when i got the golf... think i made right choice!
-
its £25 to transfer the retention certificate into your name wag (or add you as a nominee) then once this is done the retention certificate would be forwarded to you and then you can stick it on what ever car you wish (pending on year related plate/car etc), to stick it onto a car unless the £80 transfer fee is already paid for (you will see this printed on the retention certificate if it is) its gonna sting you £80 to bung it on a car..... but worth it i reckon
if you need to know owt else wag pop round, ive got private plates on me cars, on retention and all over the place!!!

my boss had his plate '27 CP' on all of his cars lol. about 4 at one time.
I suppose all the fines still came to him if he got caught speeding lol

Ive just put a private plate on my mk2 but the retention fee(£80)was included in the price of the plate.I will check my paperwork later and see what it says about buying a plate from someone else as i bought mine direct from dvla
