I bought my MK4 1.8T 2001 about 3 weeks ago, after a week of wonderful driving it started juddering and feeling like it was misfiring once it went past 2K revs. If I take my foot off the accelerator it'll stop but once you build up speed it will start again. So I took it to my local VW specialist VAG MANCHESTER and after running a diagnostics it showed the fault : 17705 Connection charger throttle valve pressure drop. So they carried out a smoke test, found a leak in the boost pipe and fixed it, or so we thought.
The car was still doing its juddering, when they cleared the fault the car would practically shut down and not run at all!! :cry: if the fault was registering it would run but not great again. They've had the throttle body out, cleaned etc, they don't think its a problem with the turbo, they even tried a new ECU with no success, still the same problem. Them and other specialists have tried to solve the issue and after a week haven't been able to sort it out. They told me they have tried everything possible with no luck, they even tried to solve it in their own time with no cost to me.
If anyone knows a better speciaist in the North West or has any idea what the problem could be, your help would be greatly appreciated! I don't know where else I can go with this.
Thanks.

did they try checking the coil packs and maf :wink:

did they try checking the coil packs and maf :wink:
Well that's I said to them when I took it in and they said they're deffo not the fault and looked at me as if I was a little stupid..

is the management light on :undecided: an phone vw see if your car is due free coil packs as they had a recall
-
No EML have never shown when it splutters! I shall give them a call tomorrow!
-
Sounds like coil pack has gone. If its an aum engine code vw had recalls on them for coil packs so give them a call. Sorry to repaeat :grin:
Im sure you can check on vagcom which coil pack is fooked :undecided:
-
get some elctro spray to clear out the maf sensor, advise changing all boost pipes regardless of what they say, coil pack check etc, may be worth while changing you DV too
-
It's ok I appreciate the help! According to the garage the coil packs / spark plugs are fine :/ I did mention the MAF and they said it's all a myth!
I will give vw a call tomorrow and see if it has been done though.

Hahaha I have don't worry! I don't have time to have a go at it till this weekend, I shall let you know what happens! Reckon it's worth unplugging it and giving it a run without the maf and see if there's any difference?

try it see what happens :wink: an give vw a call about the coil packs your car might be due some free 1s

Has a different MAP sensor been tried at all?
Might be wrong on this one but issnt 17705 an issue with a bug in the ECU software that causes fault code even though no boost leaks?
-
As has already been suggested, ring VW to see if the car is eligible for free coil packs under the recall - even if the garage claims they aren't at fault new ones won't do any harm.
Definitely try running it with the MAF unplugged, they are very prone to failure and can cause the symptoms you have described.
If the MAF is at fault then make sure you get the replacement directly from VW, non-genuine ones are prone to failing prematurely.

Clean it first with electric contact cleaner, 1.99 off the bay, cleaned mine Sunday as was revving erratically and boost gauge jumped to 0 and then back to normal constantly. Since then there has been no issues. Also that boost leak code was solved by niño by replacing all his vac pipes and fitting the forge 007p with free repair kit from forge and he doesn't have it anymore

Yip, took me a crap load to fix my 17705, I don't know exactly what fixed it but i replaced the following...
* Changed the charge pipe for an AGU one, (Mine was AUM).
* Changed every single boost pipe to silicone.
* Changed DV to forge 007p & fitted a revised piston.
* Change TIP (Turbo inlet pipe) to silicone.
* Changed Rocker cover gasket.
* Changed Inlet manifold gasket.
* Did an N249 bypass.
* Changed Injector seals.
* Changed Injector seats for the Seat white revised ones.
Then and only then did my 17705 go away :lipsrsealed:

So I've given it a good old clean, put it back but where I've disconnected the battery and it's cleared the fault.. The bastard won't run. I completely forgot the garage told me it literally shuts down if the fault is cleared. Any ideas?? I'm at the end of my tether with this f**king this.
Anyone is manchester with VAGCOM that could help me??
-
That shouldn't have happened tbh, you didn't move any of the fuses and you removed the negative first when disconnecting your battery?
-
try midland vw they are a sponsor on here they are the dogs balls they will sort the problem if they cant then no one can... also when you start the car do you get a sharp rattle noise?? as my cupra did what yours was doing and it was the chain tensioner was weak and telling the ecu to shut down?
-
John Jeffers at JVW Leigh, might be abit out of the way but he's a top guy :wink:
-
I don't have full vagcom but I can check it over for you, I'm only in Stockport and can read and clear faults for you :wink:

I think I have the same problem, if you unplug the maf and it runs ok can you leave it like that or do you have to get a new maf?
-
Best to replace it as it will be running at a default over rich setting. Get one from the main dealers :wink:

A few days after I bought my car I noticed the maf plug was plugged in properly so I plugged it back in, so I don't know how long it was unplugged for could it of damaged something?
-
Running for a long period like that could possibly damage your cat and foul up your lambdas
-
Sometimes it holds back then pulls really fast

So I gave the car a service oil, coilpacks, spark plugs and cleaned the throttle body and the car seems fine now doesn't hesitate at all it's only been a few days so if it starts again will be looking to replace the maf

I've got full vagcom and in Manchester if it's any help?

17705 is a software bug in the coolant temperature startup mapping and can be mapped out.
R-tech in Leicester can do this
