Drove the GTI pretty hard for the first time tonight, about 15 minutes of high revs (and what fun it was).
But when I got out I noticed the car had a very strong smell of burning oil, is this normal for a new car (don't remember my Scirocco doing the same) or has someone forgotten to tighten something up and I am leaking oil somewhere?
-
Yikes! How many miles have you done in total? Did you warm up the engine first?
-
I let the oil warm up - I've done about 100 miles.
-
Was the smell oil or rubber?
If actually rubber, it's been a long-term feature of previous Golfs after a thrash. In my case 20 minutes driving up a steep mountain pass was guaranteed to get the rubber bands that hold the exhaust on stinking. This with Golf 4 and the current Polo...

I should think it's pretty normal. First real time all the exhaust parts got really hot (exhaust manifold, cat, turbo etc.). It's probably just the "newness" burning off these parts.
I know mine is a GTD, but when I got it a few weeks ago, it did a DPF regen very soon afterwards whilst I was stopped at a motorway junction exit. Smelled really awful like something was really burning. After a few days the smell stopped and has never returned.

I'm pretty sure I've had this too, after I've given it a good run out. I put it down to the tyres burning a little/new engine stuff. Sorry, that's not very technical or helpful!

Yeah it's normal the first few times. Don't worry
