Title: arial
Post by: [han] on 20 August 2005, 21:42
i want to replace my arial on my car, would love a beesting, but dont want to risk drillin  hole in my roof, so i have decided a nice new shiney one to replace the old one on the bonnet would be great! its currently one of those pully uppy ones, and i forget to do it, so when i come to listen to my radio, i have to ask my lil bro to reach outta window n pull it up!! unfortunately its a stubborn fooker and don't like being pusshed or pulled in either direction! is it possible to fit an automaticly rising one on a 1.6 driver, 1992?

help! xx

Most likely.....all you would have to do is wire it in to a ignition live cicuit and the power lead that goes to the stereo (i think), so when you turn it on it shoudl go zoommm.....bang.....music..... but someone will no the technicalities of it

I just whacked mine up when i got the car and never puched it back down....was fairly crooked when i scrapped it

take the arial off and block the hole with a rubber ariel grommet

I just earthed the inner ariel wire to the car's ground and i get full reception

Difficult to find one to fit leccy wise, BMW will fit but you need the shorter motor due to wheel arch liner and the angle on the top wing face..

Fitted the universal leccy one from maplin to my mates golf and it looked fine, piece of piss to fit too, just connect it to the battery (fused) and then run a wire to the remote from your h/u (usually the blue wire coming out the back of your h/u). I put a switch in the wire to the H/U so that you can have a switch on the dash for when you want the ariel to go up and down, kinda cool and means if you're listening to cd's etc you dont have to have the ariel sticking up, just need to flick the switch whenever you want the radio.

I know drilling your roof is a bit daunting, but I think it's worth it. You have to plan it, and take it in steps up to 10mm. It's a pain I guess, having to take all the stuff off like the roof lining, belts, and plastic trim to feed it through to the front.

Worth it though!

nah i'd never drill through my roof, too much to go wrong with me

best think to do, dont pull your aerial all the way up so it looks like your a redneck with a CB, pull it up 2 lengths ( excuse me)  then autosol it so it comes up nice and shiney, then either leave it, decorate in tinsel and xmas or plonk a smiley face on it or something

do you have the visions of slipping and screeching across the roof with the drill on full whack

What you really want is a six-foot "whippy" tastefully borrowed off a 60's police car
