Title: Battery Charger
Post by: orcades on 07 October 2013, 06:35
Hello All,

I've a GTI on order - hoping it'll arrive in December.

Anyway, my question is about fitting a battery charger for the main car battery. Reason for asking is because due to work the car will sit for 3 to 4 weeks - with quite short runs in between - so not the best for keeping the battery charged. So I'd like if possible to trickle charge the battery when I'm away at work.

I've moved my Mk6 GTI on in preparation for the arrival of the Mk7 GTI, on the Mk6 GTI I used an Optimate battery charger connected to the car with the battery in situ. However I'm aware that charging the battery in the car can possibly cause problems with modern car electronics. I've two motorbikes and use an Optimate to keep the motorbikes battery charged, but I've read elsewhere that one has to be careful about charging a car battery in situ.

So I guess the long-and-the-short is, can I trickle charge a Mk7 GTI battery in situ?

Regards,

A battery conditioner that charges then partially discharges the battery should be fine. I've used one on my Mk6 with no issues at all.

Hello dubber36,

Thanks for the reply, I've been using a battery conditioner on my Mk6 GTI and my motorbikes with no problems. I just wanted to double-check if okay on the newer GTI.

Regards,
