Title: I can confirm the Front Assist and Automatic Braking Works ...
Post by: allycat45 on 06 October 2013, 23:08
So day 2 yesterday, and took the wife out for a bit of a blast and a bit of shopping. Going along the ring road and discussing the shortsightedness of council planners who were widening the road to put a new cycle path in but not using the extra space they could also have had for an extra road lane in a stretch where it really needs it.

Suddenly a squeak from the wife, a warning tone from the GTI, a quick jolt of the brake from the GTI and then into Automatic Braking mode from the GTI. Never mind the council's shortsightedness, maybe I should have been watching the sea of brake lights coming on in front of me whilst doing 30-40 mph !

Anyhow, the car alerted me with sound and jolt and then braked for me since I didn't do it quickly enough after that. I take back all those thoughts about how that little cut out in the front valance looks awful. It almost certainly saved quite a serious shunt into the back of an Audi A6 estate.

Phew. Now I know why its cheaper to insure and safer to drive.  I wouldn't recommend you try it out (remember that video a few years ago where they did it and forgot to turn the system on?), but be assured, it is there and does work. No liability accepted of course ! NB The system IS turned on by default - you don't have to go hunting for it.

  :embarrassed:  :smug:

Good to know it works and your both ok and no bent metal!

That doesn't sound too good mate. How's the car?

I'm confused. I thought this braking malarkey only occurred under 18mph as discussed here:

http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=260077.0

Or is there another braking system in place and what's the difference between the two?

I'm also curious, if the car comes to a complete stop, does it also cut the engine?

According to the manual, Front Assist provides the following (sort of in order, I guess):

The City Emergency Brake function is a more short range (up to 10m ahead) function, working at speeds between 3mph and 19mph to stop you in case of a collision. I guess that the difference between the full Front Assist system above and the City Emergency Brake function is that the first happens at higher speeds and longer distances, and it warns you once, twice, three times and then starts braking. The description of the City Emergency function seems to indicate that it does not go through a three stage warning process, but just monitors and then brakes straight away if it feels it needs to, but only at low speeds up to 19mph

I'm assuming in all these cases where braking is activated automatically that the rear brake lights do come on?

Thanks Allycat for the description.
So did your car bring you to a halt from 30-40mph?

Maybe once I've tried it I'll be convinced but I can just see it causing all sorts of problems.

I don't know about the brake lights but I would be surprised if they were not activated.

I was doing somewhere between 20 and 40 mph I guess, not sure exactly what speed. The system did not bring me to a halt - I did take control i.e. start braking myself, and the system then disengages according to the manual, but I presume that step 5 would stay in operation. I'm not keen on trying it again to test it but it's nice to know it's there

Does this mean it is almost impossible to rear end someone?

I doubt that at all. That would be a daft way for VW to describe it and an even dafter way for a driver to accept or trust in it.

The system is designed to reduce the risk of a collision and to reduce the severity if there is a collision, but as the book says "it cannot change the laws of physics".

All-in-all a great piece of safety innovation - and to come as standard is a nice to have. Sounds like it saved you a whole world of pain Allycat.

The trouble is you can't stop the fool behind you who's about to rear end you! The system would become perfect if all cars were specced with it.

With regards to the question over whether it's impossible to rear end someone, I think the brochure and manual blurp say something like " within System limits".

Obviously if you are travelling at speed and someone pulls out in front of you, the laws of physics still apply, thus if the forward inertia of the car is too great to bring the car to a stop before the collision (given the braking and tyre limits), then yes, you will still hit them, but the system will have scrubbed off some speed so the collision potentially won't be a serious as if you hadn't braked at all.

Similarly, if you are driving in very wet conditions, icy or slippery conditions, or if the vehicle is aquaplaning whilst braking, then it physically won't be able to stop you, but should still lessen the impact.

Like 5-O said, if all cars had it, perhaps the chances would be much slimmer (as you wouldn't get rear ended and slammed into the car in front (that you have just missed).

Did you keep your cool and trust fully in the system, or did you have a little accident of your own?

So, this morning some nob pulls out on me, and cuts across the road.  Not enough for me to brake, but enough for me to lift off the accelerator and hover over the brake (was only doing 50 so it wasn't high speeds).  The city braking warning kicks in and starts beeping, but didn't brake for me (possibly as I had lifted off a fraction before it beeped).  I'm assuming if needed it would have braked though.  Very impressed with it - to recognise the situation and warn me pretty much instantly.

Maybe VW needs to change the name from ADC to NCP (nob collision prevention)?

 Totally!  I've come across a load of nobs recently, this one this morning in that sh!tty jeep thing, yesterday there was a Merc C250 & an Audi A6 who wanted a play (and lost), and then finally also yesterday on the way home a Toyota Avensis diesal horror of a car   who also got a whooping

You must have the optional NAD (nob attraction device). I do find that I’m consciously leaving a slightly bigger gap from the car in front with the MK7 – partially to stop the car’s ADC reacting and partially to try and minimise stone chips. You do get plenty of people wanting to jump in on the gap the car considers safe (even at shortest setting).

I guess I must be hanging back because all the warnings I’ve had were false alerts when a bus or truck in another lane is detected, not had the anchors jam on automatically yet.

To be fair, I've been hanging back quite a bit too for the same reasons.  The car definitely has a NAD fitted to it however, and you can't turn that option off!

Hi folks - new top the forum, but been lurking since ordered in May...Th car is fantastic, and well worth the wait.

I quick question on the front assist - and probably a daft one at that!  How can I tell if its working or not?  It is enabled on setup, but have never yet seen either the red warning come up as the collision pre-warning, or the brakes applied - perhaps I am just a very careful driver but sure I am not.  Have had systems on an Audi and Range Rover before and these seemed to activate all the time...

As far as I'm aware its just on all the time.  Well, it certainly was when I was cutting lanes the other day into the left and the car thought I was too close to the van in the middle lane (which I wasn't ) and it slammed on the brakes for me.....fortunately only for a second - but it proves it works!

Haven’t had a slam on the brakes yet, but had some alerts, when something big (like a bus) slowly passes me, or when I slowly pass something big, maybe approaching a roundabout etc.

There’s also been a few times when I have been quite close to the car in front (not BMW/Audi sales-rep close!) and the cautionary sign you’re closer than the system would like to you be hasn’t signalled at all, yet another time, not even as close and it has signalled. Sometimes I attribute it to maybe the car in front dipping down a hill just before me, so in effect the radar is looking over the top of their car. Other times I wonder why the car isn’t indicating that I’m closer than it would like.

Sometimes it seems more concerned with a change in speed rather than a change in the gap size e.g. very close to the car in front, but it’s accelerating away from me slowly and opening the gap – system not concerned. Huge gap between me and the car in front and the car in front brakes a little – car becomes concerned even though the gap is still huge at the point of alert.

I could see it being an issue when you are maybe stuck behind something and you get quite close to what’s trundling in front of you, ready to pounce on a gap in oncoming traffic and get past, then the car bangs on the brakes mid manoeuvre to come out. Hasn’t happened to me yet.

I had a situation a couple of weeks ago where i had the ACC on and i had it set at the closest distance away from the car in front. Coming up to a traffic jam and the car in front starts to brake fairly rapidly but my car didnt appear to recognise the reduction in speed. So i just manually braked as i wasnt willing to find out what would have happened if i hadnt bothered.

Perhaps i was too hasty in braking but you just never know. What i would say is thats its nice to have these systems there but i would never fully trust them

I’ve had some similar encounters where I have intervened before the car – not been too tempted to wait off the brake to see if it intervenes, just in case it doesn’t! Nice to have as a last resort, but not to be banked on.

Today driving in town doing about 25-30, an old couple pulled over in front of me and the notice on the mfd flashed up in red gave an audio warning bleep also. Followed by myself flashing my lights and waving my hand

Read this post with Interest ,now the Mk7 loan car and the GTI I now have ,I think both set on medium , have never
showed any warnings or braked ,despite egging them on to do so ,close overtaking ,tailgating ,no brakes into the
garage , perhaps it's the settings ,or perhaps it doesn't work !!!!! but on 2 cars !!! :undecided:

Thanks for your feedback - seems many have seen the function work in practice - However my experience is the same as Harry - close overtaking/tail gating etc and nothing has popped up...maybe I need to change the setting to 'far away' to make it more sensitive, or is it the other way around !?!

I know the ACC is working fine, as dose the little warning if you drive too close for too long to the car in front (two cars with a ! in the middle)

Yep.  Brake test the mother f7ckers, drop it into 3rd, then nail it.  They won't be able to catch up, and they won't do it again.

Absolutely not, tail-gating is a real pain and should not be encouraged...my comment was in relation to heavy, slow moving motorway traffic when it is possible to to get a bit too close for a bit too long so that the symbol comes up on the dash!

Besides, thought tail-gating was the domain of BMW's

So far my red warning on the dash of a car inside a lane has only popped up twice, both times it was a cyclist that I was nowhere near.

I wonder whether the system is at all tied into the rain sensor e.g. wipers are on and car at any specific ADC setting isw flagging up a "you're too close" symbol at a longer distance than in the dry. It was pissing it down today and the detection of the car in front seemed more sensitive and predictable today.
