Title: Park assist
Post by: Ricepop on 03 October 2013, 15:33
I would like to know how Park Assist works.
I understand that it steers while you control the pedals but how do you initiate it?

Do you have to tell it whether you want to bay or parallel park or does it do it itself?
Also does it look both sides for a space?

There's a button down by the gearstick. That's as far as I know!

Think you press the button once to search for parallel parking spaces and twice for bay parking. Only works below a certain speed I think.

Not sure if it looks both sides (don't think so on a busy street as oncoming traffic may interfere) - may work on a narrow or one way street for both sides as sensors are on both sides.

It searches for spaces by default on the passenger side but if you put the right indicator on, it searches for spaces on the drivers side

Cool.
I have just had a call from my dealer saying my car is being loaded onto the boat as we speak so I should be able to try it out myself soon.

In Octobers VW Driver mag there is an article about the next generation of park assist. "Making use of the rear mounted camera to observe the angle between the car and the tow hitch, when pulling a trailer, allows the ECU to steer the car so that you can reverse perfectly into a tight gap."

Surely if you can't reverse a trailer, you didn't ought to be towing one?

Likewise you shouldn't really need park assist but I guess its about making life easier (and don't call me Shirley!!)
