Sorry for being thick, but today after about 2 mins of driving I got a warning light flash up in the MFD with a beep - it was the car in red, with red lines either side of it. Now this sounds like Lane Assist to me but I didn't spec it! I was going down a wide road that could be considered as two lanes but there's no road markings so I'm not sure the computer would think it was 2 lanes. Anyone seen this before?!

Was it same as this:

If so its the city braking function.

No, it wasn't that Bear! It was two red lines (like a triangle but without the bottom line) with a red car from an overview position - never seen it before, on any car!
Edit: Sorry, ignore me Bear I didn't look at the youtube video - it was indeed that! Phew!
Feel free to delete this thread Jimble as its a double post - sorry!!

What triggered it? Was it someone cutting in front of you? Seems to set it off.
I really wish the beemer had came with a radar thingy (for adaptive cruise more than city braking, but both are good).
-
I've had it come on a few times when the car that's in front of me slows down to turn left, and the car's decided I haven't braked hard enough and therefore got too close to his rear end (which to be honest, wasn't that close), and warned me by that red screen. A quick tap of the OK button on the MFSW, clears it.
-
I don't know what caused it - cause there wasn't anything in front of me I didn't think - which is why I didn't think it was the emergency break system. Thinking about it, maybe its as I came up to the junction, cars swing past to the right quite close, so maybe it was that that triggered it. Very clever I have to say - although did it brake for me? Who knows - I was half asleep to be honest
-
Will it slam on the brakes like it shows in the video if you don't press the OK button?
-
Don't know, who's going to be a guinea pig and try it
We could do with those polystyrene blocks so that we can test it safely and if it doesn't brake in time, it doesn't damage the car
-
Yeah
On one hand I can see that being a great feature but on the other I can imagine it causing more problems than its worth.
I'm thinking someone pulling in front of you on the motorway and the car slamming on the brakes at 70mph!! Yikes.
I get it all the time at a certain slip way, drivers going from the fast lane right across 3 lanes to get off the motorway

Yeah

I think it only works at speeds less than 18mph -> http://www.volkswagen.co.uk/technology/braking-and-stability-systems/city-emergency-braking (http://www.volkswagen.co.uk/technology/braking-and-stability-systems/city-emergency-braking)

Exactly, their advert video thing is misleading.
I think the intention is to stop you bumping people at roundabouts and the like. You know when someone is pulling away and then stalls, or changes their mind, and the person behind is looking to the right having seen the car in front start to move thinking they've gone and goes in the back of them? That kind of situation.
-
It just went off after about 20 secs with me - I didn't press ok or anything! I'm glad it doesn't kick in at 70mph, that could be a bit scary!

I've had that one too, it does make you jump!
I had it just following steady traffic and infront of me was a motor bike, but he was sort of hugging the central dashed white line. Then as traffic infront of us was slowing he quickly moved into the middle of the lane. Wasn't really close to him but I'm thinking perhaps the radar didn't pick him up properly or something and then suddenly heres there in the middle lane, maybe it thought someone had just cut infront of me and thats why it set it off.
Made me jump though, didn't know OK could clear it so thanks for that tip, I just had to drive on and wait for it to manually disappear. It didn't do any braking for me though as I was literally about to brake myself as it came on, but nothing other than gentle braking though.
