I can't decide whether to sell my Mk3 16v and purchase a nice Oak green 16v.
My Mk3

Mk2 is 5dr.................................. I'm Out
-
Lol very true
-
Mk2 is a 5dr but if it is a good clean straight car it can only increase in value, mk3's are not holding money at the moment.
-
Mk2 16v is the best all round golf up to and including the Mk4, not owned a Mk5 and on so cant talk about them.
3 door is best by far, I suggest owning one before they all go for silly money
As you know it takes the abf engine/box very easily and can be upgraded with Mk3 bits like mounts, wide track and brakes all sourced from scrapper mk3's
Best bit is that it is very light and hits the 100bhp per ton rule and feels fast for a hatchback with predictable handling.
Worst bit is finding good parts without paying scene tax and reliability of old electrics.
I loved my 16v money pits more than any other golf so far, very satisfying but do need tinkering time applied regularly if used daily
If you can keep the Mk3 as a donor you are sorted
-
Only real men drive 5dr Mk2's!
-
I owned a very nice oak green 16v about 10yrs ago which I spent a lot of time and money on, undoubtedly the best car I've ever owned tbh.
-
It all depends what you want it for. If it's for daily duties and your Mk3 is all up together, better the devil you know. If it's a sunny weekend car, then I'd say the Mk2.
-
What I always say and would always take a Mk3 over any Mk2 including a Rallye!
1. ABS
2. Air-con
end of.
-
You can get mk2's with A/C albeit not particularly often.
-
Well I was meant to pick up the Mk2 yesterday but got a message saying the car was not starting as the alternator was gone and needs to be changed
-
I'd take that as a sign.

Not a big deal tbh, this will be the first of many £50 notes you throw at it
Dont let this put you off as the satisfaction of owning one take most of the edge off the wallet pain, and finding the right parts and storing them gets obsesive....
I've got a brand new KR fuel pump, dash clocks/stalks and Kjet system I'm hanging onto as part of my pension plan
Edit: all about how rusty it is
-
I would describe the bodywork as 80%. There is a receipt for the car in 03 which says 'engine work carried out to customers specification' This was for about £1600. However the current owner does not know exactly what has been carried out from the previous owner who paid to have this done. He thinks it has been polished and ported with cams etc and new valves :undecided:

Only real men with no shame drive 5dr Mk2's!
This lol,i still say combine the two!
-
I wish I could but will need to sell the Mk3 to fund the Mk2. Had no interest in my Mk3. Perhaps the price of £1600 is too high hey :undecided:

Like they really are important  both go wrong and cost money to sort, we lived without them years ago so I cannot see it matters.

This is correct
And who gives a f**k about ABS.....oh yeah, our resident Geriatric.

would you have a mk3 over a tvr then?
Buy very good tyres and pay attention to the road and you wont need abs.
Air con? We only have 1 hot month out of the 12.
-
If that lol
-
Air con? We only have 1 hot month out of the 12.
I don't know about anybody else, but my air con is on all year round.
-
I wouldn't say it's always on but i definitely use it for more than one month a year. I'm about to pick up a TDI estate workhorse which hasn't got A/C and i just know I'm going to miss it, luckily winter is just kicking in and il have a better specced wagon by the spring.

Agreed...all year round on all the cars.

Seriously?
That's your argument?
So you can determine what others on the road do by paying attention to the road, can you?
I simply would not drive a car nowadays without ABS...it's a lifesaver.

I do.
We used to drive sh!t cars that didn't corner or brake well.
We didn't used to have seatbelts.
Or power steering.
Or electric windows/cruise control/traction control/ESP etc.
...doesn't mean I'd choose to go back to those times now.
-
I don't think I can sell my Mk3. It's in mint condition and I have become really attached to it. If I go for a Mk 2 in the future it will be a 3 door ABF

well I may be looking for another mk3 at the year end... so it gives you a few months to consider your options as you might convince me yours is the one to buy? (as I want one similar to yours )
-
Lol ok deal Mr Boneybradley
-
So then can we fit mk3 abs unit into a mk2?
If you got a mk3 16v donor and swap everything over surely you can do the whole brake system?
Im not sure if the mk2 ever came with air con as an option but not buying a car because it doesnt have it? Seriously?

I would most certainly have a Mk3 over a TVR any day! My Mk3 has never broken down! TVR's are notorious from breaking down!
ABS has saved me from an accident many times when stupid idiots in front brake when they dont need to!

Good decision! :afro:

I feel the Mk3 love again Len lol

Your not wrong about tvr reliability
but seriously if the bad driver infront brake sharp for no reason and abs had saved you, then you are too close to that car.
Give your self a great distance from the car infront

Sorry, but that would be your fault, not the 'stupid idiot' in front.

I wouldn't have thought the pump/electrics would be that different from a Mk2 and Mk3 so just find someone breaking a 4stud hub version, as the 5stud hubs are proabaly too big. Or the Rallye and G60 both came with ABS so you'd have to find someone breaking one to retro-fit it.
And the Mk2 did come with Factory fit air-con as my Mk2 has it, and it works a treat.
But....it kills fuel economy, hence why I only use it on weekends.

Never lose that love!

Back to the subject....
