Title: Rear suspension
Post by: shaunj on 19 August 2005, 23:24
Appreciate any feedback concerning my rear suspension. Last couple of months the back end of my car when travelling over bumps, uneven surfaces, seems to be out of sync with the rest of the car, it seems to be the rear left. If i take a bend turning right, and go over some rough surfaces the back end seems to kick out, as if its working against the rest of the car. It wll also do it in a straight line sometimes, travelling down a motorway, the back end will really kick out going over repairs in the road. Is this down to worn rear shocks or could anything else be responsible.

Thanks in advance
Shaunj

Unless you know for sure the shocks are in good order its likely to be them more often than not. First thing i would check anyway.

The rear axle/trailing arm bushes might be knackered if the struts are o.k.  :undecided:

Defo sounds like the rear beam bushes are shot to me. Bit of an arse to get the old ones out, and you have to use a special tool to get VAG ones back in, but if you get poly bushes they just go straight in no bother.  If I was going to all the hassle of taking the beam off I'd defo get uprated poly ones to go back in :)

I would look for leakage around the shock first.

Agreed, check suspension 1st, then beam bushes :)

My dads Mark 3 has a similar habit, it tends to skip and wobble a bit when going over bumps, and on his the shocks definately need replacing, so i would do that!

Hmm would having buggered rear beam bushes cause one of the rear wheels to pivot slightly (noticable at slower speeds) cos I have this problem   or would that be the suspension? OR a bit of both
