Title: Well i'll be......
Post by: Sootchucker on 28 September 2013, 22:35
Went out tonight for my first proper night time drive, and was very surprised and delighted to see that my Xenons are the cornering variety.

Now by that, I don't mean it has the extra halogen light that shines sideways when you make a slow speed turn (which all xenon equipped cars have), I mean driving down a dark country road, my beam bended as I went round corners. At first I thought I was seeing things, but the wife who was sat next to me concurred, there's a definite bending of the beam when you do a series of left then rights with the beam moving accordingly.

Interestingly, when I started the car tonight, we both noticed that as well as doing the little up and down dance that the Xenons do, it also did a side to side swipe as well (really noticeable on the wall the lights were shining on).

Exactly the same as this youtube video:

Do all GTI/GTD's have this or is it because I've also specced the main beam assist so have a small camera at the base of the mirror looking forwards just below the lights and wiper sensor ?

I'll try and get a video of it if its possible.

It's standard on the GTI with xenons. My mk 6 does the same. The start up dance is the car running diagnostics to make sure the motors are working. This is for they also auto level dependant on weight in the vehicle. You wil notice there is no way for you to set this, xenons are so bright they would blind an on coming driver if set wrong so they HAVE to do this by law.

All very  I have to admit!

Yeah my X-trail does the self leveling thing, but do the GTI / GTD's have cornering lights as standard? All information points towards them having it as xenon is usually an option on the lower specs, but standard on the GTD's and they include cornering. (And I seen vids demonstrating it)

You should also have a setting for "Dynamic bend lighting" in the mode menu as you have DCC? Not sure what difference it makes but i was glad when i found out the active xenons were standard.

I've got the option on mind that says dynamic bend lighting in the DCC menu.

So... Is this confirmed then that the GTI/GTD's have dynamic cornering lights?  Thought it was just statics.

Erm, yeah....

Indeed, but ignoring the previous replies, do the GTD and GTI have cornering lights as standard?

I should be picking my GTI up this week, and I'd also like to know if my GTI will come with these fancy cornering lights?

Well all I can say chaps is that I ordered nothing fancy when it came to the lights, and my Xenon's have the standard H7 Halogen sideways facing static cornering lights which come on at lower speeds, as well as dynamic bend lighting which moves the dipped or main beam left or right as you turn the steering wheel.

Note that the dynamic bend lighting only comes on over a certain speed, so don't expect to just turn the steering wheel with the car at a standstill and see them working - they won't. However, what you should see, is when you switch the lights on for the first time at night, as well as the usual Xenon up and down dance, both lights turn outwards together then inwards as part of it's start up diagnostics.

Probably one of the few who would have been disappointed if they were not on it as when was choosing next car this video made in May was one that convinced me these would be what was on GTI/GTD http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MDqXqr8KLG0 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MDqXqr8KLG0)

Very cool  and whether I was right or wrong to presume that at the time glad they on there regardless.

On my top 3 things to address in this vehicle change was lights.
