Tonight I took my son out to football training and returned early evening,I locked the car up on our return and after a couple of minutes the alarm went off. I unlocked it and opened and closed the drivers door and relocked it.
A few minutes later it went off again. This time I opened and closed all the doors, checked all windows were shut -opened and re closed the hatch and the bonnet and removed the air freshener hanging from the rear view mirror.
It lasted about half an hour this time but it went off again.
While I was sat waiting about earlier I did scroll through some of the settings on the MFD,but I am not aware of altering anything.
I have owned the car for a month now without any problems with this or with anything else really.
I have had to turn it off for now as I dont want it disturbing everyone tonight, but that's not ideal.
Any ideas anyone please??
Thanks.

Some other mk6 GTI owners have experienced this in the past. Try the search facility on this forum (search on 'false alarms').
I also found this old thread on the mk6 section of the uk-mkivs forum, which suggests some possible causes;

Try arming it by pressing the lock button twice.
This disconnects the ultrasonics.
Ultrasonics are known to go faulty on alarms.
If it still goes off its a door button or bonnet switch.
The bonnet switch on the mk5 was known to be troublesome.

Cheers lads.
I think I may have solved this-I have gone in it this morning and there was an enormous daddy long leg flying around inside.
I hope this is it anyway!

I was just going to suggest this. I had my alarm doing the same last week for the same reason. Reckon it could have been the same one ?

I don't think we will be troubled by him again though!
It hasnt gone off since so it must have been that.
