just spoke to a vw dealer, he said hes paying more for a mk5 GTI than he was last year, much like in 2009 (i dont know apprently vws appreciated in that year)
and i have to say looking on auto trader i think i could probably get back what i paid for mine last year, although i do like mine very much so i think i'll be holding on to it for a while longer yet :)

This is possibly good news, however I'm about to modify mine so I wonder if it'll mean that modified Golfs will also increase? Also, will this cause the price of parts to increase as well?

Cerialkarpins - What plat GTI did you buy and also if you dont mind me asking how much?
Im looking for an MK5 GTI 05/06 and so far the average price im seeing is around 5K. Would this be correct or should I be looking harder for one thats cheaper?

the 05 plate 1 we had cost me just over 4k there is plenty of them for sale now  so cant see them going up in value

There is only one direction modified cars go in and that downwards I am afraid - you never get the price of modification back unless you are blessed enough to sell your car to a like minded individual - which does happen from time to time..

Yeah, I'm aware of the de-value effect modifying can have on a car, but no-one really does it as an investment, only because it brings us a bit more joy while driving. I just mean if the base price rises by, say, £1000 compared to 2 years ago, does that effect every GTI price regardless?

mk5s are dropping in value can pick them up for silly money now compared to a few years ago

Yeah, when I remember when they were still 5 figures to buy! The new GTI is £30K once you chuck in DSG, leather seats and a few other toys... One day it'll be below £10K... I hope.

Pahahahaha, Mk5's appreciating....... I nearly spat my tea out

They will be below £10k soon enough, they will lose a third in the first year of ownership, they all seem to..

Even so, still more cost effective to modify mine with a few grand and get it more powerful and better chassis setup than a Mk6. If I upgrade now, I'd have to go Golf R anyway, my rule is I can never go down in power. :)

You should go back to the vw dealer and slap him.

Lowest plate I can see a stealer buying is 06/56 plate. maybe the dealer was getting confused with the ed30 which could/will become a collectors item.
