Hi everyone I only have one day to purchase a new tripod its for a Expo show and only places are currys and not sure what high street shop jessops is gone, so dam it why now!
I have a cannon 550D SLR.
Links at what I going to be buying would help Budget £50 MAX
-
I have one of these, it's really good, small enough and lightweight enough to carry but really sturdy.
I've had my 60D and a 5D2 on this. £43, although I got mine in the sale for about £35 earlier in the year.
Manfrotto MKC3-P02 (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Manfrotto-MKC3-P02-Compact-Photo-Kit/dp/B0049SVU26/)
Ok, just re-read your post, so you have one day to buy it.
Where are you, Surrey?
If you can get to a Jessops.....
Jessops Store Finder (http://www.jessops.com/storefinder/)
you could get one of these: Velbon DF61 £40 (http://www.jessops.com/online.store/categories/products/velbon/df-61-tripod-87319/show.html)
Currys also stock this Velbon for £28
Or get a better Manfrotto MKC3-H01 £50 (http://www.jessops.com/online.store/categories/products/manfrotto/compact-tripod-in-black-mkc3-h01-80245/show.html)
Or you could get the same Manfrotto from Currys for £40 Here (http://www.currys.co.uk/gbuk/cameras/accessories/tripods/manfrotto-mkc3-ho1-compact-tripod-10278010-pdt.html)
Velbon are decent enough budget tripods, but since the Manfrotto are in the same price bracket, I'd go for those if you can.
The only issue is that they may not have these exact models in store.
If you were going into London at any point, I would suggest going to London Camera Exchange (The Strand) or Camera World (near Oxford Street) or Calumet (behind Euston station).

Cool just picked up Manfrotto MKC3-H01 £39.99 from curries 10 OFF TESTED the tripod nice panning handle and steady enough for the job I think  I will give it a full test tommorow at the expo and report back if its any good.
cheers for the suggestions

The MKC3-H01 is basically the same as mine (the MKC3-P02) except with a panning head for video, which I kinda wish I had now. But I hardly use mine, so it's not a big problem.
If you're walking around doing video, monopods are quite popular because you don't need to set up 3 legs each time you want to shoot.

I got the same one from Argos. Same situation as you - needed one at the last minute. Imagine it should be fine for your needs.
-
Hope so mate I don't even know what I'm doing  worried about the lighting as it will be very bright and packed out two day event and hope it goes well TBH.
I liked the mono pods saw them aswell, maybe a later purchase.
I've been out of photography for so long now I want to come back but just can't get my head around functions not that I need them but feel bad I have a decent camera I just simply do not use at all "where has the passion gone LOL" :lipsrsealed:

Is this a expo in a busy hall? Surely you'd be better bumping ISO up and shooting hand held.
Setting up a tripod in a busy place will be a nightmare.
-
It went well over the last two days, got a few good shots and the tripod was used early on when it wasn't busy.
I did group the legs up and made a single tripod to move around better it worked for me and its nice bit of kit. There was obviously better equipment on the show made me feel quite inadequate

Glad it was useful.
That inadequate feeling is annoying, then it becomes gear envy, then gear lust, then if you're not careful, you fall into gear acquisition syndrome (GAS).
I'm trying desperately NOT to spend silly money on a lens right now.
Get a couple of photos up to see what it was like.
-
Cool but they will be generic due to clients wishes :lipsrsealed:
It was a food expo but I only had small window to do the shots I was learning about people and it was a long ass two days got up at 6.30am got to expo 9.00 finished 6.00 got home 8.00pm.
Hard work they do the food industry plus its cloak and dagger with prices, supplying manufacturing and BS
Nah don't have enough monies to get GAS  Shame I wanted to speak to other photographers but everyone was just too busy! I'll load a pic or two Sunday have a full day today with family but will review them this evening!

Neither do I really, but I bargain hunt. My latest was a Nissin 622 flash gun for £54. My excuse was needing it for a party ;)
-
lol I did see a lense cover surround on the end of a long lense made it look longer
Not sure what it did but guessing it focused light from one direction when flash lights are going around from other cameras?
-
Do you mean a "lens hood" ?
They do make the lens look longer, but it's purpose is to stop bright light from hitting the front of the lens in such a way as to ruin the photo.
A little reading:

Yeah second one from the right, but bigger never seen them except in a soft rubber cone version, don't forget I've only used manual Nikon's and Olympus ones still not comfortable using DSLR, but don't have time to experiment either
-
I don't have much time either, between kids, wife and shift work, but I take my camera to work and use it on my lunch breaks.
Try each different function one at a time before you get onto full manual.
Start with Aperture Priority (Av mode on Canon) and learn about aperture first.
Or if it's rubbish weather, do some reading.
-
Which tripod did you go for in the end?
-
The same one you as yours mate it was on offer £40 Manfrotto MKC3-H01
-
Nice. It's fine for everyday/generic use and it's served me well for the times I've used it. The problem is that it doesn't do panning shots which I'd love now that I've got a 70D.

There is some focus issues wanted the square focus area wider to soften up areas and make sharper but hey just a few I did take 100 pictures with the limited time I had still learning though
