Title: LHD xenon headlights
Post by: pryda on 22 September 2013, 18:25
whats the deal with fitting LHD headlights to a RHD car? I'm desperate for a pair of xenons, but all I can find on ebay is LHD versions from germany and america.

can these be fitted with some mods?

cheers

I can't see any real reason why they would be built differently? Hopefully someone will know if they are.

I would have thought it would just be the positions of the beams, you can adjust those with a 6mm hex key (both up and down and left and right), although i also believe if you re-calibrate the system with VAG-com on level ground it will sort it out itself.
We discussed it at work before i re-adjusted my lights and the concensus was if you disconnected the position sensor on the LH rear suspension wishbone and then plugged it back in then it would probably re-calibrate itself as well. I haven't tried it so don't quote me

I opted for the Manual adjustment with the hex key for setting height (which was my issue) and it was simple and quick. White does up and down and black does left to right, all you need to do is work out the positions before removal and then set the new lights to the same post installation.

I hope it is this easy or if there is a reason it won't work hopefully someone knows.

Good luck

Sandy

There is more to lhd/rhd adjustment than just up and down and left and right. The lenses are different so that dip beam has a kick up to the ditch side. I will stand corrected on this but I'm pretty sure when you adjust rhd headlights into travel mode for driving on the right, you get a flat beam as opposed to a true lhd beam.

Yep I would say you are right dubber36.

RHD:                  \__\__
LHD:                  __/__/
TRAVEL MODE: _____

Basically you would be blinding oncoming traffic with the LHD units unless you had them in travel mode all the time.

Fit right hand drive ones and make sure you fit the ballast/auto leveling as well, otherwise they're illegal.

Hazzy Dayz will supply and fit OEM lights for £1710 all in http://www.hazzydayz.com/genuine-vw-golf-mk6-xenon-headlight-upgrade-174-p.asp but that is without washers and leveling. If you also want LED xenons, you will also need rear LED's. Your plug and play copies won't do, as the car needs to know it has LED's fitted. As yours have resistors in them to confuse the bulb out warning system, your car doesn't know anything is different.

£1710 is a monumental amount of money, but to put it into context, it's only around 4 months of PCP drip that many Mk7 owners will be paying to ride round in their new cars.

Personally I wouldn't bother. I bought a B7 Passat Sport earlier this year with every intention of retro fitting all the bits that I would have liked to have speced had I bought a new one. Now it's come down to parting with the money, I can't bring myself to do it. I'd rather save the money and by the next car with all the bits on from the start.

you can pick up a set of genuine RHD xenons from VW for 900 quid. so looks like hazzydayz are looking to rip off customers (unless they want to justify charging 800 quid for fitting!)

I'm looking for a decent set of used lights for around 400-500.

Remember to factor in a new CECM or the high beam shutter won't work.

If you want the Adaptive part of the Xenons to work and the Autolevelers, so you don't blind people every time you accelerate, you will also need the AFS module and the associated wiring looms.

Does the £900 include ballasts and bulbs, or is that just the shell of the light?

I needed to buy a new ballast for my previous Passat. Only a genuine one would fit and the best price I could get was nearly £200 from TPS. When you add up all the parts you need to do the job properly, is is very expensive.

There was talk on here a year or so back about some aftermarket halogen projector lights that you could fit a HID kit into. They look very similar to OEM LED xenons, but only have a xenon dip beam, with a halogen main beam lamp where the indicator should be. To most people they will look good, but those of us that know, will spot them a miles away.
