Title: Extended warranty costs
Post by: Hartside on 22 September 2013, 10:20
I've had my GTI since new and my warranty ran out in July but I never received the letter inviting me to take the extended warranty. Given the number of chain tensioner issues I want to get one sorted out and I'm wondering from those who have taken the VW extended warranty which one you went for (comprehensive, named component etc) and the cost involved.

Just for comparison for 1 year cover Warrantywise is quoting £666 (the number of the beast  ) I cannot get a VW qoute as I need a PIN and can't get one today

My VW warranty which was Comprehensive, No excess, no roadside assistance, was £326 for a year.

As far as I am aware it had to be taken out before the manufacturer's warranty expired.

Thanks Mike, it says on the website that it can be taken out after the warranty expires as well, but I wouldn't be surprised if the cost is more.

Hopefully you can tell them that you never received the letter and they will do it at the same price.

I also got a quote from Warranty Direct for over £600, VW were the cheapest by far.

Here is my quote at the time with the various options.

I've not heard great things about some of these 3rd party warranty companies...make sure you read the small print about what is covered and considered wear and tear.

They also have a fixed labour cost, so anything over this you pay...and only a percentage of the costs over a certain mileage are covered but this will vary from policy to policy.

Usually failure rate will increase with age which is when you actually need the extra cover...

The adverts on tv are cringe-worthy too.

That's why I went for the VW one, at half the price of the third party ones,  which are the prices quoted above.

Makes you wonder how these third party warranty companies get any business.

Yes I agree, I only looked at Warrantywise for comparison, it would be a VW extended warranty I was after. Thanks for all the info, really helpful. Hopefully they will give me it at those prices. If the letter had come, I would have signed up straight away

I think the extended Manufacturer warranties seem to be more genuine.

The reason 3rd party warranties exist is because they try to convince people that everything on their car is going to fall to pieces and I guess people buy into it...

At £600/year you might as well leave money aside in case of expensive repairs, at least it's still there if you haven't spent it!

I got a quote when I got my car from VW, Im sure it was something like £300 - £350 for the year, it wasn't too bad but decided against due to a VW being reliable

Oh well learnt the hard way.

If the vehicle has ran out you can still have it but you need to take the vehicle to a dealership to have a check over so they can make sure no existing faults are present i.e. this is why your now wanting warranty!

Priced about £100 i think it was. But after that price was the same..

Did not take the extended warranty either for the same reason - VW reliability. Now thinking about VW warranty at the next service in a couple of months.

Phoned VW extended warranty today and they confirmed they had not sent me a letter offering the extended warranty as the registering dealer had not supplied the with an address - surprise, surprise the dealer in question is flogging their own warranty.
They quoted Comprehensive cover at approx £570. Thanks to Mike I was able to question the price and asked if they were quoting a higher price as a result of them not having my address - ie not my fault.

Upshot is they are going to check with the Underwriter and get back to me to see if they will offer at a lower price

I take it older the car gets the extended warranty price will go up?
I was quoted £550 from warranty direct but will see what VW will quote me when the VW one runs out.

Will be interested to see what sort of price you guys get. I don't realise you could get a vw warranty as I just bought a used gti and went and got warranty wise cover. I think mine was £500 for the year but I upped the labour cost and added in a few extras. Just wanted that peace of mind for a year.

I took out the VW warranty on my 09 GTi a couple of months ago. I didn't need to have it inspected they just wanted to know it had full VW history and wasn't modified it cost £371 for comprehensive, £100 excess, no roadside. It seemed a lot better policy than any 3rd party one whose prices were ridiculous.

Finally got mine sorted out today they rang back and offered Comprehensive with roadside for £33 per month. Worth it for some peace of mind.

The whole saga is crap though, VW should be recalling these cars and fitting a revised part.
