There, I said it
Just been playing with the Bluetooth today whilst waiting for the wife to finish shopping, and discovered that you can't access the contacts list in the centre MFD using the steering wheel buttons, like I could on my old a scirocco.
It seems, to access your contacts, VW want you to take your hand off the steering wheel and use the touch screen of the infotainment screen, and then do a search (all one handed whilst driving with the other). Surely that can't be safe.
In the Scirocco, I could scroll down in the MFD using the steering wheel button, then enter the contacts list and scroll through or skip contact letters by keeping hold of the down arrow key. All of that functionality it seems has been removed from the MK7 (at least in mine it has).
I thought, no problem, I'll use voice control, but that seems flaky at best (unless it just me).
What do other people think ?

When I had the use of a gti demo for a few hours - my iphone 4s worked fine and I was able to scroll through contacts and select using the steering wheel controls without any problem - all displayed on the mfd
-
As above, I have no problems with the contacts menu through the MFD when using iPhone 5 via bluetooth.

Interesting. How exactly are you guys controlling the contacts through the MFD and steering wheel controls please ?
All I get access to is the last calls list only.
Also, whilst I'm in an asking mode, went out tonight with the wife, and for the. First time used the sat Nav, which in itself worked fine, but up unlike previous generation VW's, as soon as navigation was actually started, the MFD didn't automatically switch across to Navigation section like I expected it to. I had to manually navigate sideways thought the menus to bring to Nav instructions up on screen. Is this unique to me as well ?
-
Yes I would be interested to find out how you access the contact list through the mfd because I have only ever been able to access the call register.
-
It just worked! I didn't do anything other than press a few steering wheel buttons. May be something needs to be set in the settings? As it was a demo car and I haven't got mine yet  I can't help sorry.....
-
Hi again. Can anyone who has access to more than just last calls in the phone section of the MFD (I.e. contact list), post some images please, as this is really starting to bug me now.
Preferably, when using an iPhone if possible, so if required I can show the dealer. Thanks

is your iPhone software up to date and is the nav software up to date?
-
My my iPhone is running the last software update before IOS7 but I do notice the latest software for the Nav Pro on VW's website is a little later than mine so I'll give that a try.
McMaddy, are you saying that you do have access to the contacts menu in the MFD rather than having to use the Nav pro touch screen ?
If so could you let me know what software your Nav Pro is running please, as the latest one on VW's website is:
V03959800LF 0072 ECE 2013/2014,
but mine is currently running:
V03959800LF 0062 ECE 2013/2014.
Could you let me know what sort of phone you are using as well - pretty please
-
Well, I've just spent the last 2 hours upgrading my Discover Nav Pro to the latest software version V03959800LF 0072 ECE 2013/2014, and although its solved the "issue" over not switching over to the Nav screen in the MFD when routing is started, I still can't access phone contacts through the MFD (just last calls).
I've tried it with the wife's phone (an iPhone 4 whereas mine is a 4s), and its exactly the same. I'm wondering if this is an iPhone issue now rather than a car one if others have been able to get the contacts up on the MFD ?
-
I've had a look on my car, using an iPhone 5 with iOS 7 all I get in the MFD is a list of last calls - no contacts list either. May well be an iPhone thing as they don't play well with anything other than Apple products.
-
Cheers matchbox. At least I know its not just mine
-
For some reason I get shown about 10% of my contacts only

Yes, mine doesn't import all of my contacts either. Not that I mind as I only really call the missus from the car!
-
Well, I've just been contacted through twitter by VW when I asked the question as to why the contacts were not showing up in the DIS display, (like they did with the previous generation RNS-510 and RCD-510 units), and they confirmed they are not supposed to show. Apparently if you want to go through your contacts, they must feel its safer to take a hand off the steering wheel, and look down at the infotainment screen, and click and scroll to find a contact whilst driving
How the heck can this be safer than having both hands on the steering wheel at all times and using you fingers to search whilst occasionally peering down at the instrument screen ?
Sorry, but I think VW have dropped a huge clanger on that one.
-
That sucks
Can you get a list of your favourite contacts? Or is it recent calls only?
Boggles the mind why they are taking backward steps with something like this.
-
Yeah, seem crazy that VW actively expect you to mess with the infotainment screen whilst driving, when on earlier generation models, the contacts list is easily available in the phone menu of the DIS. Why did they feel the need to change this, and who the heck thought this would be a good idea ?
Definitely a backwards step from the MK6 / Scirocco platform. Maybe we should all complain and see if it can be added as a software update ?
-
Well, I've just checked the part numbers in ETKA for the control unit for the Discover Pro in the Golf, vs the Technology pack in the Audi A3 (8V) - which is also an MQB platform car, and apart from the VW to Audi signifier code at the start, they both seem like the same part number.
Also, a couple of guys over on the Audi-net forums have confirmed that not only do the contacts come up in the DIS and are controllable via the MFSW buttons, but also, that they can play ipod/iphone playlists when connected to the AMI (our MDI) socket.
Looks like they have kept the goodies for Audi ?
I feel like I'm on a one man crusade against VW here

It's the same issue with navigating SD cards etc - the MFD just shows the track playing info and you cant navigate to new folders etc unless I'm missing something. Would much prefer to have the option not to use the touchscreen when moving.
-
Sorry guys, now I've got my car I know the post I made about displaying contacts on the mfd was b*llocks! I think I was getting confused with an audi demo I had.
It seems you have very little control over the media unit from the steering wheel and I am disappointed you can't navigate folders and select contacts, music tracks etc. Seems a very basic omission to me to have to use the touch screen all the time...
-
At least it means you weren't driving a super special version, as I'd then have to kill you
I'd agree, the MFSW and DIS integration with the Infotainment unit seems quite poor on the MK7's. Hopefully this is something VW will address with future firmware updates ?
