Title: Pulling my hair out now!!!! still wont rev past 4500 rpm
Post by: mervsnart on 21 September 2013, 16:30
Hi guys sorry if im a pain :lipsrsealed: got a mk3 gti with an agg engine (8v). it will not rev past 4500 rpm, had a new dizzy and hall sensor, crank sensor, cleaned throttle body, new cam belt timed spot on!! fault code 00515 wont clear but think that's down to a faulty code reader, as it wont clear others stored.
Don't know if this helps, before I refitted the alternator drive belt I ran the car and it wouldn't rev past 3,000.

Any clue where I go next, airflow meter? lambda sensor?

Any help would be greatfully appretiated

Thanx in advance

wiring to hall sender or timing are my bet

(the 00515 would say it's hall sender related and cracked/old wiring will make this code stay, the wiring gets brittle over the years and creates issues like you have)
you either needs to buy that part of the loom or make you own, which is quite easy to do

when you say timing, do you a tooth out? made sure that is all spot on
will cut back the wiring to the sensor, how far back do you suggest?

wheres the ecu on these? could the ecu been damage thru jump starting?

cheers buddy

Dizzy timing could be out, does it line up to the mark at C1 tdc?

Do it manually.

Get piston in cylinder 1 to tdc (top dead centre) then see if cam pully lines up with the markings.

Then take dissy cap off and get the dissy bang in the middle of the cylinder one firing points.

Log the hall sensor with vcds in measuring blocks. It will give you the specification of where it needs to be and its current reading. From memory the hall sesnor needs to be reading between 358' and 3' to function correctly, adjust the distributor until the appropriate figure is seen.

Oh I mean take spark plug out and put a long screw driver down the bore and feel for tdc.

have you checked the timing mark on the fly?

if you done what I said then it will line up.

By the way how did you get number 1 piston to tdc?

Timing from bottom pulley can be a bit iffy its got a shty mark on it and it's hard to line it up without looking from the wheel arch.
You can double check with a strobe nice an easy.
99% of the time its timing giving this kind of problem the rest of the time it's the sensor

Yeah sounds like timing to me still

so rather than timing it up via crank marks, I can use flywheel marks? if so what marks am I looking for on the flywheel?

would stored fault codes affect it, or abs light on?

it really doesnt matter. If you get number 1 cylinder to tdc the timing marks on crank and fly will line up.

Hench why I asked how you got it to tdc?

timing mark on crank pulley against mark on aux shaft, and screwdriver down no.1 plug hole

If its all timed up correctly at tdc and your rotor arm lines up with the mark on the distributor then you are timed correctly and more than likely the wiring to hall sensor or the sensor itself. You can check them with a meter although I can't remember the values. Abs light wont interfere.
