hi you lot, i havn't been here for ages what with a new job an everything, but its 2.30am and ive just got home from being picked up by the A.A seeing as though i thought my car would run longer with no oil in!! So whilst i was approaching j27 on the m25 my engine went bang and now only rattles.
Obviously i will probably need a new one, i reckon about £800 should get me one, what do you guys think, and can anyone reccomend some good people to talk to regarding this?
thanks gary  :embarassed:

oh dear mate, thats not good at all
wouldnt bother with a complete engine, just replace the broken bits.. where abouts are you ?
-
Hi mate im in basildon in essex,
This is my first blown engine, im thinking that the amount it would cost for the parts it wouldn't cost to much more to get a new/reconditioned one, im gonna phone round now because my usuall garage i use didn't wanna touch it.
-
First quote: vw stealer brand new engine £1850, my garage want around £350 to fit then wack a load of vat on top TOTAL: Around £2500
Second quote: Second hand engine £860 £300 fitting plus vat TOTAL: AROUND £1500
Third quote: Engines direct, they will collect it, fit it and even drop it outside my door for grand total of £1365 that includes vat.Thats a brand new off the shelf engine 0miles.
What you reckon, after my first few quotes i feel thats a pretty good price.

3rd quote is bloody good mate... if id have known about them last year id have sooner had a full new lump in mine instead of fookin about like i did and spending loads!!
id do a few more checks that all is ok with the firm that supplied that quote and there deffo sure they know what car youve got and havent got you confused with a different golf (ie 8v etc)
the vw quote aint bad if thats for a full engine, i got quoted at around £1200 just for a new 20v head with valves/guides last year
second hand engine is expensive just for a lump, id be wanting the full lot, manifolds, pipes all other bits aswell for that, but then if its come out of a smashed car, youd really need some proof that it wasnt involved in the action!!
what ever your choice mate i hope it all works out, quote 3 seems the best to me provided they know what there doing..20v engines are a f@cker to set up!!!!!
-
I will continue to ask questions, its definatly the 20v he's got for me that was a question a previously asked him. The couple of things i do need to check are that they call me before changing any hoses pipes etc.
And that that price does not include my current engine being in a reconditionable state, (which it isnt).Apparently they can sometimes add a surcharge if they find its unusable up to £500, i will double check that.
Because despite me asking for full price inc vat all through this process, and i even have a quote via email, at no point has anyone or does the email mention any terms and conditions, or subject to anything.
So fingers crossed! x

Good look mate

SH1T!!
Il have to go back to the second quote, engines direct have built the bill up to £2345!!! Extra £595 because my engine is completly knackered.
And a ni on service on top, because of reccomendations like spark plugs, clean out, timing belt, antifreeze, my turbo is moving more than it should be!? water tank is corroded a bit!? and air filter is a bit dirty!!!
So after telling them that £2g + was a little bit out of my price range, i still have to pay them £200 for labour and the pick up! I feel violated!!
So far ive spent £252 and ive been told my engines knackered twice. And my cars 70miles away!
 :embarassed:
-
blimey!! how come you been charged that with out any work done??

-
£50 pick up from essex to twickenham, west london and 3 hours labour, remove engine and strip it!
-
I think you've been done
-
To right ive been done, i just been down the garage that are eventually going to carry out the work, because he advised me to look at the car and bring a camera!
When i go there every part of my engine bay including battery was somewhere inside my car on flimsey plastic cheets!
The gearbox was on the front passenger seat, engine block at the back along with all the camshaft and pistones, and in the boot dumped on top of my lil tool box, and cleeaning gear was everything else.
I didnt of course expect them to put it all back together after stripping it, but it shows a total lack of respect for someones car, not only may it mark the recaro's that arnt cheap to replace, but the smell of metal and oil in the car will take ages to go!
The whole thing has been completly DUMPED anywhere it can in the car. Ive taken some pictures and i intend to write a nicely worded letter asking for an explanation, not sure if i should push for a refund though?
Its also very hard to imaging with my discription of how it happend and the 3 x 4inch hole in the block itself they felt the need to totally strip it before telling me there's an extra £800 to pay.
For your records they are engines direct, its the first people on the google search after typing "reconditioned engines"
Any one else used these?
