on my way home tonight I noticed when I stopped at some lights it was idling at 1250 revs, I blipped the accelerator pedal and the revs dropped back down to 900. When I got home I had a little look/feel around the accelerator pedal and it seems loose. When I pushed it down it didn't retract back fully and when I pulled it back it made a clicking noise. Is it the cable that will need replacing or is it something worse

I would start with replacing the cable. Not a hard job to do with a Haynes one spanner rating!
-
agree with above. cheap and easy first port of call.
-
Yes I think you are right, I put my hand to the left of the peddle and can feel a split grommet, Probably change that as well. Pop in to TPS tomorrow and see if they have a cable and grommet in stock.
-
yeah that grommet thing is a bit of a hash design.
-
just checked Haynes manual its a 2 spanner job  think I,ll just remove the cover inside the car and see if I can just repair/replace the grommet

Fitted new cable and pedal feels a lot better, but still have the sticky revs when changing down gears. I,m thinking it might have something to do with the clutch cable or isv. Anything else it could be.

Try cleaning the ISV with carb cleaner. Faulty throttle body switches throw the tick over all over the place. Check for broken wires or even becoming un plugged.
