I have used the search function and scoured google but I'm still unsure. Next march I plan to do a 20vt conversion. I feel fairly confident about the mechanical change over. I know what parts I should need ect. However the wiring loom is putting me off. There seems that everyone out there had their own ways of wiring the car including custom ecu and the lark. What is the best recommended way of doing the wiring loom to work on the car? I plan to buy a Octavia vrs donor car and use the parts from that.

It's easy to simulate working the wiring out:
Pull all of the wiring out of the Octavia and lay it neatly out on the floor
Drape it over yourself
Set light to half your hair whilst draped in the loom
Pull out the other half of your hair, still draped in the loom
Knock yourself out by battering yourself around the head, using only the Haynes manual for the Octavia
Actually what you need to do is get the right wiring diagram for your Golf. Get the correct year etc wiring diagram for the Octavia, then understand both, then strip the wiring out of the Octavia, strip it down and remove the unused wires, then power it up attached to the engine and other ancillaries, check for fault codes, then find the power feeds for the Golf loom and match them to the Octavia, find the gauge feeds from the Octavia and match to the Golf, get the ECU cracked so it doesn't need the key and clocks if you want, install new loom in Golf, on chocolate blocks to test, put motor in and make it start and run, pull motor out and loom out, finalise connections, replace all and start and run to test wiring finally, then pull and wrap and install everything else.
Should be done in a weekend.

Or, contact an extremely helpful chap by the name of John (forum name rubjonny) and he'll splice the two together for you.
Saves f**king about.

Wanna bet?
He pops on from time to time, and would answer a PM if one was sent.

How come he never posts anymore?

Well I won't be doing this for a few months so hopefully he is still around. What diamond hell posted is the exact reason why the loom is giving me brain ache. I start my apprenticeship next week and hope by the time engine conversion comes around i Might have learnt a few transferable skills.

or you will have got so sick of working on cars that you wont even bother with conversion  jokes aside. its just a case of starting of at the engine sensors and working your way back down the loom methodicaly labelling as you go and removing wiring you don't need. quite enjoyable once you get started and you have a few months to pick away at it.

Luckily I'm not working on cars, it's just a hobby. I will be working on aircraft.
