so, my abf needs the timing end crank seal changing. losing alot of oil and im getting scared im guna forget to top it up and its guna go bang.
would do it my self but havent got the space or the time at the moment. has anyone paid a garage to do this recently? what sort of price will i have to be paying?
or should i just put up with it and put money towards 1.8t

Might be cheaper to buy a engine

No point putting old belt and tensioner on unless its new, so that's about £60.
Oil seal is about £10.
Maybe 2hrs work in a decent garage providing nothing else goes wrong should be under £200.....

called the local vw specialist and said it would be around the 250 with new belts. i was expecting it to be more tbh.
and i have got a lightened flywheel still to fit once the oil is sorted, so there still some more fun to be had from it lol.
think i will stick with it!

Anyone know if they're woodruff key?
250 sounds good if they're using a decent belt kit and might as well have the water pump while it's there.
I'd do yourself a favour and get them to replace the 4 allen key bolts holding the main pulley to the crank gear. I always do it now, any VW that I do a belt on I automatically order those four bolts.

My bad its 100% cheaper than what I thought it would cost you.

They just strip easy once they've been in and out a couple of times. Think they're 93p each or something and theres four.

Pray the thread's in the gear dont strip or its a ball ache.

threads should be fine as long as a gung ho gorilla hasn't been working on it. its possible to change the seal without taking the belt all the way off. just mark it up and release tensioner. them crank pulley centre bolts can be darn tight though and sometimes strip the lug off.

cheers for the advice people, il ask them to change these over when it goes in which i hope isnt long
