Title: Cutting out when raining
Post by: nedward on 17 September 2013, 21:40
On my way home in the rain my car just died, it gave a little splutter/misfire then stopped and would not restart. Cue me sitting at the side of the road for half an hour!!!

I then tried to start it again which it did with a fair bit of hesitation. It would then try to stall again unless I kept the revs high, around 3000rpm.

Up to this point I have been experiencing some hesitation whilst pulling away and in the evening when i leave work (the car has been sat inactive for 8 or more hours)?

I had this problem earlier this year, at that time I changed the rotor car, dizzy, plugs and leads. It seem to work fine although the worst of the heavy rain had also stopped.

I feel this problem is water related, maybe the coil pack?

If any of you could shed some light I would be very grateful.

Lastly my car is a Mk3.5 golf cabriolet fitted with the 2.0 8v awg i believe.

Check coil for cracks. Get someone to turn it over in the wet and dark and see if you can see sparks arching anywhere.

or spray the coil with wd40, then leads then any other electrics where water could splash at when it next rains (today I would guess).

it was wonder stuff when i drove a mk1 escort that were known to hate any type of wet!

I only got rid as I needed an everyday car (I swapped for an XR3i) and to think it would be worth £££ now (and was worth nothing in 1994/5)

Thank you for your replies.
In answer to them, it seems to do it when the engine is hot and or cold?
I had tried some wd40 spayed over it , unfortunately that didn't work either.

I have now fitted a new coil pack and it seems to a have worked, fingers crossed, but we have not had the torrential that always seem to set in off since.

On a side note I work very close to my local VW steelers so I thought Id pop in and see how much for a coil pack....... 0VER £150

Local mot £40. Shouldn't surprise me but some how it always does.
