just bought a Audi 2.2 throttle body, now will it make that much difference to my 1.8 gti? :undecided:
-
well half way through fitting the new throttle body, just need a new gasket and that should be it! cant wait to see the difference! will let you all know what its like!
-
I did the same to my mk1 1800 some years ago and it did seem to make a difference although i had to sod about swapping the springs over from the old one as the 2.2 ones were too weak .
I believe the other mod you can do is to fit a warm-up regulator that has a vacuum take off as I have been told that it too can make a difference :undecided:
-
just been out for a blast! it pulls like a train from 3000 and just keeps going! made a big difference, my car already has a manifold and zorst! still running a standard air filter though! best 30 quid i have spent! loads more mid range, should go even better when i get round to getting a k & n and drilling me air box!!
now the only trouble i have is that it idels at 2000! i have wound the screw in at the far side of the manifold right in but it hasnt really helped! how can i get it to run at about 1000 rpm? rob
-
The only comment i can say is.....Awesome
And fuel economy....nah, don't want that
-
Any backfires on lift off ?

On that subject , the other thing that can make a difference is to adjust the CO to 3.0% at 3,000 rpm if you can afford to ,as it drinks the fuel but makes it go a lot better from what I can remember
-
does anyone know how i can get it to idel at 1000/1200? it idels at 2000 now!!
-
Is the basic setting correct on the throttle stop adjuster , as someone may have fiddled with it previously .
Also does it return fully to the stop . As I said in a previous post the 2.2 springs tend to be a bit softer/weaker than the Golf ones ,at least that's what I found when I did this mod. :undecided:
-
where is the throttle stop adjuster? the springs where fine, both butterflys closed and opened fine!
-
It's a smallish thread with an 8mm lock nut on the throttle housing which is usually painted/sealed yellow at the factory ( unless someone has adjusted it and painted it another colour )
-
i think i have screwed it right in as it was running at 3000 thou at first, is there anything else i car do? or should i undo it?
-
Sound like your referring to the Bronze idle screw which goes in at an angle of about 90 degrees at the back of the throttle body with a 7mm hex head on it .
Did you swap it with the 2.2 one ( which I believe has a slotted end to it ( for a screwdriver ) if so that maybe your problem as it may not go far enough in to slow the idle down enough :undecided:
-
its the one it came with, should i try the normal one off the 1.8 one?
-
Could do if it fits :undecided: also ,make sure you haven't got any air leaks . With it running ( obviously ) spray some WD 40 or Duck oil around the gasket and see if it makes any difference to the idle speed :undecided:
-
will give it a try bud!
-
Having swatted up on this sort of thing reading golf+
According to them, when putting a throttle body on your engine, you have to choose one carefully, becuase if you put on that is of an engine that is fair bigger than your own, you can cause it to idle irratically......just a thought......
Or you could alsways "modify" the idle screw so that you can screw it on further
-
changed the screw over from my old t-body, now idels at about 1800/1900! oh well its faster so i guess i will have to live with it! not the end of the world!
-
just one more thing, what are the two little pipes coming off the back of the t-body near the idel screw? my 1.8 one only has one which fits to a small rubber pipe, my 2.2 one has two, i have put the rubber pipe on the one which is in the same place as the 1.8 but ther other one has nothing going to it? would this affect how the car runs???
-
Try blocking it and see what happens. It's probably a breather but it could be letting in air which is causing your idel to up.

thats a good point! i didnt think of that!!
-
My 1900 has the 2.2 throttle body and fully worked head witha schrick cam and ticks over at around 1200 (quite lumpy but that just sounds better )
i will have a look at what set up it has on the pipes next time i go to see it,
-
yeah that would be good mate!
-
I cant work out which pipes you mean :embarassed:
-
comes off the side near the idel screw, near the coil
-
Maybe wayyyyy too late with this one, but that extra 'take off' pipe will be the reason it's idling high, if there are no other leaks, block it. Please let me know how you have got on, as I have just spent two years restoring my MK1 1600 and have got the same mod as you, but have yet to fire her up. (hopefully tomorrow)
Cheers

Just wondering but will the mk2 golf throttle body do the same job?
-
mmmmm dunno, the only difference is that the big butterfly is loads bigger, but you would have to have them side by side to tell the difference.
-
The MK2 throttle bodies are the same as the 5 cylinder jobbies. Just swap over the linkage because the MK2 uses a cable and clip instead of the cable and ball-joint.
My TB has the vacuum pipe, facing the front of the car, blocked off. The dizzy etc run off the second pipe off the back of the TB.
-
now have had mine fitted for a while but i still cant get it to idel at less than 1800 rpm! what can i do? also is it worth making the inlet manifold bigger for better air intake or will not make a great difference?

Toofunkyhouse - I don't know what you can do... but I do know a man who does.... Give Steve at C&R Enterprises a call... I bet he can tell u what to do.... they are really friendly there and they are the company that provides advice to everyone in the VW Magazines...
