Guys, I will swing either way ...but the wife wont!!!.......Transmission am on about
What am I missing out on if i went manual on a GTI, because I cant seem to convince the wife that the DSG is far easier to drive and smoother......would it be best to get her to test drive one and compare the two, or is there any tips for me to sweet talk her into going DSG with out a test drive....
Please help

It's a well argued subject, but go for the DSG. Why is she so set on manual?
I'm a woman and always had manuals until 2008 when decided to go DSG, for a change. No looking back now. It gives you best of both worlds. For boring town/school runs just stick it in drive and your away. For rural twisties/country and spirited drives, go manual with paddles. Gear changes are seemless and smooth.
My only worry when I first got DSG was that I'd get out of practice with a clutch pedal, but as cliched as it is, it's like riding a bike. I drive manuals now and again and it's still second nature

Arrange a test drive during rush hour and then let your wife see how easy the DSG is in stop/start traffic.
My wife hasn't ever used the paddles on the steering wheel but wouldn't consider going back to a manual after the ease of commuting using the DSG.

You have to convince her.
My wife had a manual Mk5, and when it came to change I convinced her to have a DSG, well in fact I just went ahead and got it for her. She now wishes she had made the switch earlier. A convert.

Whose paying?
If you search there's loads of info on Manual vs DSG.
DSG offers rapid and smooth progress that cannot be matched in a manual but the manual offers more driver involvement, the clutch isn't heavy and the gear throw is reasonable. This can be modded if it's too long for your liking.
Occasionally I want a manual but I'm happy with DSG, if it was a larger CC engine with a soundtrack I would probably choose a manual. DSG is good round town and in traffic as well...how can it not be easier than a manual?
I find the paddles a bit of a gimmick but you have the option to change with the stick as well. You can't go wrong with either but if you've never had DSG before now's the time to try?
Are you interested in modifying and will the car have a warranty? The box is expensive to replace, but it's rare for the whole Gearbox/Flywheel and Mechatronics to sh!t the bed.
I would still say the Mechatronics unit is a potential weak point which will see you part with roughly £1800 (Part only) but I wouldn't let that scare you out of ownership.

The DSG box also needs oil changing so depending on the mileage of the cars your looking at you may want to find one thats had the DSG service done.

You really need to drive them both, and let her drive both, and then decide.
I have DSG on my TDI and it's great...suits the character of the engine and seems to be in the gear I want.
But I drove it on a GTI and hated it. Absolutely detested it. It couldn't have been more wrong if it had tried...I took the car back quickly. So I bought a manual.

I was looking for a manual GTD but then saw a lovely DSG model. Tried it and loved it. One of the reasons being I find the tdi very restrictive in first gear, unless you rag it it feels slow off the line. The DSG jumps into second so smoothly it's not noticable. The wife (to be at the time) didn't like autos but I dragged her down to VW (when she was picking up her wedding dress so you can imagine how annoyed she was) and she absolutely loved it. I wouldn't buy a manual VW group diesel now. Not sure about the petrols though!

You won't get the DSG farts with a manual

I have had both and i found DSG so so so Boring !!!
Even if you use it in manual, i just felt so dis-jointed from the car. sold after 3 months and bought a manual.
Everyone is different - but you must test drive before you buy....

Guys thanks for all your feedback......all of you have mixed feelings and some have settled into the DSG from the word go
So looks like the only way will be to get her down and test drive both types of boxes, and in both Diesel and Petrol
I like the look of the GTI, with the exhausts pipes on either side, and there is just something about owning a Gti that puts a wee smile on your face. I have always said I will own a Gti later on in life and this is the time...(mid life thing) :smug:
The motor we have just now is a BMW X1....a totally differant car all together so will be a big change for the wife!!!
Once again guys thanks for your input and will report back with the results of our findings....

I moved from a manual bmw to a dsg gti and the wife says it the best car she has driven....

Do all mk6's come with paddles with dsg?
-
GTI and GTD have the paddles as standard but if you want it on a GT or SE then it was an optional extra.
