Title: Raging
Post by: mk7gti on 16 September 2013, 10:51
Called into my dealers this morning to pick up a USB cable. As I was walking back to my car the lady beside me was getting out of her car and along comes a gust of wind, you can guess the rest. I am now the proud owner of a lovely crease and missing paint on my drivers door

oh nooooo..... nightmare! I've been there, its a royal pain in the.....

Would a PDR fix it? You say there's paint missing but are you sure it's not a scuff that won't polish out? If you can get away with a PDR it's be ideal..

The first MK7 casualty documented. Well at least you were there to see it rather than some arsehole do it to you and bugger off because the financial implications of a claim make many people hit and run. New door or will it push out? Spent a good few mins with new car paranoia whilst selecting a parking space at the metrocentre, looking for an end space so I was only exposed on one side, next to a car significantly more expensive than mine, but of a type more likely to be privately owned so the owner cares enough not to hit my door.

When I used to work at Fords (as a contractor), it was our site’s turn to get a new flatbed van. We had to go up to head office in Essex to pick it up. We were following a 7.5ton flatbed with a load of stainless pipe 6” o/d. We went to overtake it it and their load slid off the side when the side-gate opened. The side of the van got smacked by the pipes and one caught the back wheel , causing a blowout and we smacked into the side of the other flatbed. 37 miles in and our shiny new van was wrecked. I wasn’t driving (phew!)

I’ve also been unlucky enough to have had my 2 week old MK5 Golf belted by a bus.

Really gutted for you. It's the worst feeling in the world.

Something happenned to me at the weekend that whilst not as bad, still makes me fume.

Picked up my teenage daughter from a party on Saturday night. She asked if I could give a couple of her friends a lift as well. Being the nice guy that I am I said yes. We hadn't gone more than 200 yards when one of her friends vomited all over my lovely new car.....Needless to say the new car smell has gone

There is nothing worse but I'm sure the woman would have been horrified as well. At least as MH says, you were there to witness it as many drivers would just bolt without leaving a note

I have had the new car smell replaced with something less nice too (my own fault). My first MK5 Golf was bought from Lookers Burnley via a broker. I decided to make a trip down to my parents house in Southampton. Got the car down there, and I got a great deal on a P&O ferry crossing Southampton to Le Havre the following day.
My dad asked me to bring him back a few small whole “Port Salut” cheeses from a Hypermarket that we were going to. We got loads of shopping (mainly beer) and we got back on the ferry. The car deck was freezing so we thought nothing of leaving our shopping in the car.
Didn’t realise how hot the car deck gets when sailing is underway (ship engines generating heat) and the following morning the car smelt like cheesy feet. Had the windows open for a month before the smell dissipated.

No protection unfortunately. Luckily I had some really good upholstery cleaner that has cleaned it really well. So no staining. But the smell - that's going to take time.

And no - she will most definetely not be getting another lift!

One thing about new cars, including the MK7 is the lack of "protection" on the doors, bumpers, etc. It looks much better and cleaner but has obvious drawbacks! E.g. The MKV had door rub strips, so chances are if someone smacked your door they'd hit that plastic strip and you'd only have to repair that and not repaint the whole door

I have had the same thing happen on my previous brand new civic type-r.  I pulled up at my parents house and the wind was blowing down the drive.  I said to my wife watch your door doesn't hit the wall!  the wind had caught her door before I managed to say the 'wall' part of the sentence.  It had caused similar damage and creased the edge of the door in.  I was not a pleasant person to be around.  I had to take it in and get the door panel fixed and resprayed.

I also had my wife's, brothers friend (a girl who had just passed her test) reverse in to my other brand new Type-r in my Parents in laws drive (which is huge).  She damaged my bumper and scuffed a load of paint off.  The drive is really huge, you could turn a lorry around in it.

The moral of my ramblings is, I feel for you mate.  If it were me I would have it sorted out properly by your VW dealer.  The bad thing is if they respray the door they will also have to fade it in to the surrounding panels as well.  So for such tiny damage it could cost a fair bit.  If you can get the women who caused the damage to pay for it.  It may teach her to be more careful next time even if it was an accident.

Regrettably I too have joined the club. I took my grandson to school 2 days after collecting the car and on my return journey met up with an impatient school bus driver on a narrow  bend and his manoeuvring forced me into to taking avoiding action which culminated in me kerbing my nearside wheel. My daughter was mortified as she blamed herself , obviously unjustifiably, for asking me to take my grandson to school . You have my every sympathy.

I had the same thing happen to a five week old Mini.  The very same day, I discovered that some idiot had put a 4" scratch down the  rear left corner of the car.  That night, it was someone's stag do, and as I don't drink, I was on driving duties.  We pull up into a car park and my passenger flings the door open, right into another attendee's 4x4.  Result: a lovely chip on my nice new paintwork.

After expressing his dismay and saying he would pay up, he and everyone else wandered off, leaving me seething (I should gave gone home immediately).  When later he realised that there was another scratch on the car and I would need to get some respraying done anyway, he changed his mind and refused to pay for repairs.  We had a "discussion" about it on Facebook, but he was adamant he wasn't going to pay.

I haven't spoken to him or otherwise been in contact since.  It wasn't so much the damage that annoyed me (that could happen to anyone), but his "couldn't care less" attitude.  Still, there was a good side, as it made me re-evaluate why I was friends with him at all, as it wasn't the first time we'd had "issues".  Some people just aren't worth bothering with.

OP: that's terrible!  Did she offer to pay for repairs?  Hope you get it sorted soon.

She did offer but she was a 60 year old woman driving a wreck of a car. She probably think £50 will fix it. I'm going to have a chat to my friendly sales man and see what he says. Best to ask the experts

To be honest, your VW dealer / salesman won't be much help to you here... not in my experience at least. Your best bet is to get recommendations for a good local smart-repairer / paintless-dent removal experts or worst case scenario, a decent paint shop.

If it’s bad enough to flake paint off the door I’d want the door doing properly (maybe not if I was getting shot of it in a few weeks, but you only just got it)  – not some smart paint job. I leave small dings which haven’t affected the paint at all, or scratches to the chips away etc lot. Get it to a proper bodyshop at the lass’ (or her insurance) expense.

I know exactly what you mean, but the flip side is I'd hate the thought of having to repaint a whole panel (and adjoining panels!) on such a new car for what is a very small ding. If it were at all possible to do a smart repair I'd investigate that first... it would be a shame to repaint half the side of a factory fresh car unless absolutely necessary IMO.

I agree with Monkey Hanger.  If it's worth doing, have it done properly. Else you will always look at it as if there something not quite right about it.

I called into the body shop tonight and they have stated the whole side of the car needs to be resprayed and all trim removed  Final quote £703.46.

My brother is a car detailer on the side and he thinks id be mad to get it resprayed and a good PDR session should sort it. I know my dad had great success with this after his car was attacked by a screw driver a few years back. I think I'll chase that tomorrow...

Do VW have a dedicated body repair workshop? The reason I ask is that I know Audi have their own which I have used before and they were excellent. If VW did have a similar set up I would rather it take it to them than an independent.

I completely agree with your brother. At least try the PDR route. It won't make it any worse!

When my Civic Type-R was resprayed for the edge of the door being buckled and scrapped similar to this scenario Honda told me they would only take the paint back halfway along the adjoining panels to the door panel they were to respray and remove the dent from.  I am surprised they have to do the whole side of the car.  I also don't remember the cost being as much as £700+.

I would have it done properly and go to VW if at all possible.  Also if you have her details, you have to surely get the woman to pay for the damage.

I would get it done right first time. What if PDR doesn't work out to your satisfaction? The lass pays coppers for PDR settlement then you get shafted for £703 to put it right - you can't expect her to pay twice if it needs doing twice.

Don't forget a decent body shop will offer a smart repairs/PDR service at their premises. I found a nasty scuff mark on my bumper the other day down to bare plastic  Took it into a good body shop I've used in the past and they quoted £400 for a compete bumper respray or £80 for a smart repair. I went with the cheaper quote and they did a perfect job. I can't see the repair and estoril blue is a hard colour to match and blend in.

Sorry you have had such bad luck op. The first mark on a new car hurts the most.

Excellent! I reckoned the PDR would yield a good result, I've had great results from taking that route in the past.

You'd have been mental to repaint half the car for that ding IMO.
