Drivers wiper left a smear on the return stroke for a while, seems OK in the rain today.
Mpg is nowhere near the + 18% claimed. 10% at best.
Xenons seem to switch on too early when switched to auto, even on 'late' setting.
Overall though this a fantastic car, close to perfection - very close.
-
One day I will get my car and then I can join in.........
-
They are starting to arrive, slowly but surely.
-
Agreed about the Xenons staying on too long. I also had a situation the other night when it was raining fairly hard and the auto wipers weren't activating. Other minor niggles are:
1) Intermittent squeak from drivers door now and again - I don't know if its something to do with the rubber seals
2) Not a niggle but a potential problem - the doors do hold at a certain opening point but its not big enough to get out. Therefore if you open it a bit further and let go it just swings open. You have to keep reminding passengers (i.e. the Mrs) not to let go of the door. I can see that dreaded moment when it swings open and smacks a wall
3) Lots of stale muddy water being caught on the boot sill, i.e. runs of the roof and just sits on the back sill. It then subsequently drys and your left with a filthy looking rear end
4) The carbon fibre effect being a pain in the arse to keep clean
5) Again not a niggle but a nuisance. When your on the sat nav screen on the MDF and you want to change radio stations, when you change, it doesn't tell you what station your now on. The only way of checking is coming out of the nav function and into radio
-
Craig, I can't remember if you've had a Golf before, but if not some of these niggles don't surprise me. Two in particular - the auto wipers: always been sh1t, used to come on when they didn't need to and not come on when it was p1ssing it. The other is the filth at the back of the car - used to infuriate me, the rest of the car would stay pretty clean yet the back look like I'd been through a field. Sounds like the mk 7 has continued with these trends.

I get the same problem, only when the wife is in the car though

Any fogging or steaming up of the windscreen guys?? this annoys the hell out of me on my mk6

I can only comment on this courtesy mk 7 I have, but yes a lot of fogging of the windscreen - highly annoying.

Had both a Mk4 & Mk5 pal but at the time my budget was tight so never had the automatic wipers. As for the sill at the back, well both cars were black and I wasn't really into looking after my cars as much as I am nowadays

Problem in the mk6 for me too, not a problem yet - time will tell.
I found a monthly clean with Autoglym glass polish helped a lot.

Haha yea dont tell the Mrs!!
Fogging....i said fogging... was a right pain in my mk6, caused no end of problems, just hope its not as bad in the Gti mk7..

Yes, this happened to me this morning - was like a river just like the mk 6
-
Never noticed this in the mk6 or mk7.
Why would you have the window open?
-
Because I prefer fresh air to aircon, even on a rainy day.
-
I had to use rubber lubricant on the window/door seals already due to squeaking. Perfect once i did that. It's no surprise, I've had the same issue with every car I've had.
The drivers wiper is hopeless. Big dirty smear.
The dash does collect a lot of dust.
The wheels aren't as easy to clean as they look!
The rear end on every Golf has always been a dirt magnet. It's a lot do do with the shape of the car, the slab-sided vertical hatch sucks the dirt up.
Agreed on the Nav / radio. It'd be nice if you could see on screen what radio station is tuned when in Nav mode. It already shows the clock, the phone signal, etc so why not the radio info.

The wiper blades seem to have become quite an issue. According to this:
http://www.golfmk7.com/forums/showthread.php?t=469&page=4
Bosch are releasing a new set of blades for the Mk7. Possibly a free dealer replacement?

I had mine replaced at the 1k check up. The new one did exactly the same thing.
It seems to be sorted now though, I think it just needs to wear down a bit.
Not great on a new car. I still might call into my dealer for a Bosch wiper (or two).
-
My wipers have improved a lot with more rain today, although you can't really tell when it is sorted until you get smears with very light drizzle.
Smeary VW wiper seems to clear a lot of rain well, but a little not much. I generally find auto sensitivity works best with the stalk toggle 1 click away from max. It would be handy if the springy flick was between auto and off - to make it handy to do a top up wipe when auto just doesn't cut it (like for light drizzle or when a big drip rolls off the roof, going nowhere near the sensor)without knocking the auto off.
My Xenons have been on in everything but blazing sunshine, even with the auto lights set to "late".
My mpg is sh!te right now. Started on an indicated 50mpg for my first few trips.DPF attempted a regen between 65 and 85miles, achieving 45mpg indicated whilst doing it. My 170TDI Scirocco would manage 50mpg right now and the GTD is supposed to be 20% more frugal. Haven't experienced appreciable gains with the miles going on with past VWs, but it seems to be the case with the MK7 - my dad's GTD has gained about 10% in 4k miles going on it. Will fill with V-power as soon as I use up all my delivery diesel, it gives about 5% better fuel economy and far fewer DPF regens (which kill mpg) on my Scirocco, presumably due to it's cleaner burn and higher purity.
I have a squeaky passenger door seal.
Spent tonight stripping my Autoglym (because it won't last 5 mins apparently) and applying G-Techniq C2V3 instead. I now have the Teflon feel on my car's bodywork. Using the treated hydrophobic application pad worked wonders for minimising use of product. Pooling of water was highlighted during the process of stripping and cleaning, especially on the top of the rear bumper, under the tailgate lip.
I wanted to shift my car a few feet and the handbrake would not disengage - coudn't figure out why until I put my seatbelt on. It would not disengage without you being belted up. Highly annoying - I presume going backwards instead of forwards would disengage, but didn't tryit.
-
If you put your foot on the brake pedal you can disengage the handbrake manually.
-
MH I tried to reverse this mk 7 without the seatbelt on with the hold assist on - it wouldn't reverse until I put the seatbelt on - highly irritating as was only going a few feet!
-
you don't need your belt on to move. keep your foot on the brake and press the ebrake switch. brake will disengage and allow you to move off.
-
Picked up today, felt like Christmas.
Dealership did well, spent 20 mins going through the vast array of settings etc.
Features that impress (however small) include:
The clock
The standard stereo's quality
3rd gear shove
Ride
Mirror closure at lock
Interior lighting (adjusted to the max, clock on dullest)
Profiled indicator arms
Cornering lights
Short gear throw
Lap timer (unused)
World car of the year sticker in the rear window
Improved heating / AC
Slight niggles:
New key orientation
Hill hold doesn't remain on
iPhone cable is too long and can prevent opening of compartment, beware (now knotted to shorten)
Roof and window closure at lock doesn't work ( being looked into)
Headlamp washers operate when unnecessary.
However, overall very impressed. Big improvement over mk6.

Didn't realise you could change the auto lights to this "late" setting, or that there was any kind of setting to adjust the time / sensitivity of that! Read good chunks of the manual but missed that.
Need have a good sit in it tomorrow and go through every single menu I can find I think... Probably need a useful tips / settings thread :P
-
2) Not a niggle but a potential problem - the doors do hold at a certain opening point but its not big enough to get out. Therefore if you open it a bit further and let go it just swings open. Oh I hate this one. There are certain things I know my wife's brain just isn't wired to consider as important and I'm always saying "remember to do X". She gets pissed and gives me the glare so I say "ok I won't remind you but if X happens then I'll be real upset." What happens 5 minutes later?
Of course its then explained to me how really its my fault, rubbing salt into the wound.

Seems to do nowt TBH. In a pretty bright day but not blazing sunshine my Xenons were still on.
-
Few more minor niggles. I thought the menus for the MFD could've been a little better thought out in order of appearance. I expected the trip info (mpg, temps etc) to be right next to the audio with nothing in between, seeing as I expect most people to be flitting between these 2 modes the most when on the move (as I am). The safety features are wedged in between (safety first I suppose).
My handbrake/autohold has driven me mad today. release of the car has been intuitive and as expected from Tues to yesterday, but at times today it seems to have clamped on an not let go in certain situations, like reversing into a space and then shuffling forward to straighten up has required a hard press on the brake pedal at every direction change - feels very un-natural.
-
It does take a little getting used to.
All good now.

Aye, but you look a right idiot when it happens. People must think you've stalled the car.

Car going great except for one niggle. The dreaded creaking door seals in front doors. Have applied the Gummi Pfledge stuff that worked on my MK6 but hasn't done the job so far on the MK7. Has anyone got this on their new motor? Irrigation tubes are not an option IMO as I shouldn't have to do that to a car I just paid €40k for ! Is a trip to the stealers my only other option where they could make it worse ?! Other than this, car is a dream to drive and own. Thanks.
-
Ok, just a very minor one, but on my Scirocco with the RNS-510 and 9W7 Bluetooth, when programming in the 5speed dials, I could rename them to what I wanted.
For instance, on my phone, my wife's contact has 4 numbers on it: our home number, her mobile, her work mobile and her works landline. I could select the first two and rename them for the speed dials as "Home'" and "Ange's Mobile", in the Scirocco, but in the Golf, you can't seem to rename them, so both speed dials have the same contact name.
Has anyone found a way around this yet ?
-
Might be easier just to setup 4 seperate contacts instead of the one with multiple numbers?
Eg Ang Home, Ang Mob, Ang Work
?

I had this exact issue (as with every car I've had) and Gummi Pfledge did the trick. Silent now.

Thank for reply Joe. Where exactly did you apply the Gummy? On the door seals? I'm sure the noise is coming from the felty kind of material at the top of the door where it touches the paint.

I have a different car but I had the same problem from new  After a lot of research and trial and error I finally tracked the squeaking down to the felt seal that runs along the very top of the doors and front A pillars.
I used Autoglym Vinyl and Rubber on all the rubber and felt seals and that worked a treat too. (There are quite a few seals on modern cars so open the doors and look for them all. Some are double sided, so treat the inside creases of these too.
Other tips I learnt from research :
1. Strip off any existing wax or existing treatment with panel wipe / IPA / fairy liquid (both the seals and the paintwork that it sits against).
2. Never use a silicone based wax or spray on the seals or the paintwork that the seals rest against.
3. Apply the rubber treatment every so often to stop the felt seals drying out.
4. Do all doors the same.
5. Treat the seals and the also the paint within the door shuts that they sit against. I always used to wax the door shut paint and that may have been my problem.
It has silenced my problem for the last 10 months after driving me mad for a few weeks
-
Yeah as above, it's the felt-like material on the door frame that causes the issue. Mine started after the car was pro detailed. The rubbers must have dried out after whatever soap the detailer used.
A liberal dose of Gummi Pfledge all around those felt seals around the door frame did the trick. I'm sure as per above that other rubber lubricants would work too.

Is the electronic handbrake applied when the car is turned off? With my current car I have never used the handbrake, just use park.
-
I may have made a mistake. Took my car in to the dealer today because i was having some issues with a noise that was coming from behind the dashboard. Just got a phonecall to say they have had to remove the dashboard to investigate. They suspect that it simply requires more soundproofing as apparently there have been previous issues with other Golfs.
I just hope that it doesnt lead to further problems/noises down the line. However, to be fair, it needed to be done as it was a very audible noise. The car was to be collected today but the technician doesnt want to do a rush job and i agree. Should hear back tomorrow from him.
He has already heard the noise himself and has said that it wasnt acceptable and that when i come back he will come out with me on a test drive to make sure everything is ok.
On top of this I have had other noises as well including something that appears to be loose in the drivers door and is flapping from side to side when i go round corners. The noise coming from the door rubbers as well is bloody frustrating.
It seems neverending just now and im not particularly impressed to say the least. My TT never caused me any of these issues

Get yourself a bottle of Gummi Pfledge off eBay, apply that liberally to the felt door seals all around the top of the door frame and your door rattles / squeaks will definitely go away. I've been using this method on different cars for years and it works every time.
As for removing the dashboard.... oh noooo..... not something I'd ever want the dealers to do unless it was absolutely drastic (maybe if I'd lost my winning lotto ticket down the back of the dash, then I'd do it). Good luck with that!!
I have a minor irritation on mine, there seems to be something loose under my drivers seat, it sounds like maybe a loose screw or coin is trapped in the seat runners and it moves back and forth as I accelerate/brake! Other than that, no issues... the dash does creak a little occasionally (around the air vents), usually if the car's been sitting a while and the plastics are heating / cooling... I've also had this in every car though and its not a constant rattle/creak.

sorry to hear of your issues Craig, noises and creaks are very distracting and do ruin your driving enjoyment (my MK5 had all sorts of squeaks - mainly from the centre air vent on top of the dash).
Luckily, after nearly a month (and despite the very poor roads around us), my GTD has remained completely silent - not a squeak or rattle at all.
-
Hopefully they can get these things sorted Craig - let us know how they get on.
-
Cheers Guys. Fingers crossed they get it fixed.
@Joe, the noise was just too much unfortunately Joe for it to be left alone. Every time i accelerated this noise was appearing so it had to be resolved one way or the other. I am worried though about any future repercussions from this work

When you collect it mate, can you ask exactly where and what the problem was please?, i'm having exactly the same problem and it will need sorting so it would be good if i could tell them exactly what to look for rather than them pulling it apart trying to find it?
I picked mine up last saturday and it's got a small dent in the n/s rear door like someone has leaned against it and it's got 2 paint inclusions on the o/s A pillar! the dealers have agreed to sort it but it has taken the shine off it a little tbh, when i've had chance to give it a good clean i'll post some pics and a little write up.
A little thing that bugs me is i have DCC and like to have the suspension in comfort as our roads are terrible, i also like to have the motor in ECO for when i'm picking the missus up so you'd think the "individual" setting would be ideal but the eco setting for the motor when in individual is different to when DCC is set to eco?? The DCC setting lets the engine coast when going downhill or lifting off etc if that makes sense?? But the individual eco setting never coasts!
Oh and the MPG is woefully poor!! 34 in a manual mk6 26-27 in a DSG mk7 wtf??

No problem Jimble. I'm sorry to hear that you are having similar issues especially as you have just collected yours. I will let you know how I get on and will keep you posted on exactly what work they have carried out.
Looking forward to seeing some of your pics pal
-
I'm quite concerned with all these reports of loose screws, squeaks, creaks & leaks...it doesn't sound like the build quality we are used to with VW. I'm guessing they may have increased the speed of their production to get the cars out quicker and the quality is suffering as a consequence? Maybe the factories are under pressure to get the cars out quicker.
Yes the mud always used to drip onto the boot sill & make it look muddy. Shame it's not been fixed!
-
Jimble get a PDR guy to look at the dent! After the job I had done on mine I cant praise their work enough...

Unfortunately mate, this is exactly what expect from VW these days, the mk4 was the last of the well built Golfs and even that had it's issues! The pro's far outweigh the cons but it seems build quality isn't fantastic anymore.

Have I missed your pics Jimble?! Didn't even know you'd got yours! We demand to see it!
-
No mate, no pics yet! I'll get some up this weekend hopefully after a wash and i've sorted my laptop so i can hide my reg. :embarrassed:
-
The MK4 the last of the well built Golfs?! You must be joking surely. The MK4 was mostly hopeless. Lots of soft touch plastics gave the illusion of quality but it was an illusion! The likes of the Focus of that era was better built and a much better drive to boot.

A quick question to all those having the dreaded door sill creaking. Have you had your car professionally detailed?
I ask because on a previous car I had the same problem after it was detailed. I couldn't get rid of it whatever I tried. I'm sure that's where the problem comes from - the detailers must use some cleaning solutions that creates the issue.
Not had it done on the Golf and it's completely silent.
-
Well I collected my car from the dealer today and I have to report so far so good. The rattle from behind the dash appears to have disappeared although I will need to test this more thoroughly. The technician basically said that they added more soundproofing foam to compress the wires/leads etc so that movement was restricted. They also sorted the noise coming from the door which was a loose speaker cable.
The only thing that has not quite worked are the creaking door seals. They did say that they had applied some lubricants but almost as soon as I drove off the noise was there. Not too concerned about this.
Everything appears to have been put back in order properly but I'll have a good look round tomorrow in the daylight.
One other thing. I had intimated to them that I knew what the mileage of the car was so that they got the message. I.e. No long distance joyrides. I was trying to be subtle as I didn't want to come accross as a complete cock. Anyway when I collected tonight it had an extra 20 miles on the clock. Seems quite high to me.
-
Wasn't there a post on here somewere by a vw tech who said the dash rattle noises is normally the heater pipes rattling against each other and he had fixed quite a few so far?
-
suppose it depends on the garage test route and how many lunches they needed to get for the grease monkeys

Does rain still drip through the driver's door window if it's open half an inch when it's raining? Still annoys the hell out of me.
..Hello all,i'm a vw virgin but have just taken delivery of a golf tdi a couple of days ago.Today is the first time it's rained and with the window open slightly it dripped in all over the 4 buttons for the leccy windows. It may sound like a stupid question but is this a pretty isolated problem or is this type of thing taken for granted by
"DAS AUTO" owners :undecided:
-
I don't quite follow - if a window is open and its raining, yes water will come in! If the window is shut and you have water ingress there is a problem.
Modern cars dont have 'gutters' as such so water can easily come in through open windows. Close em when its wet!

It's happened on every Golf I've ever had, and it's more noticeable in a Golf than in every other car I've ever driven! One of the "quirks"

It happened with our focus too, oddly enough it annoyed me more then than it does now in the golf
