Hi guys,
The time has come for my GOLF GT TDI 140 to have a timing belt change. Looking to get the job done at a trusted none VW garage but was wondering at 4 years old with 80k on the clock what was actually need?
1) Just a new belt fitted?
2) Timing belt kit (with tensioners etc) fitted
3) Timing belt/Kit and Water pump
Any help appreciated
Thanks

Always a complete belt kit and at 80k water pump too.
Also genuine parts only.

As above, get the full kit from VW.
There's no point in spending a few hundred quid on labour for the belt and tensioner only to find something else related fails a few months down the line (unlikely but possible and once original parts are disturbed they can start to fail).
Also it would be worth checking what your local VW dealer will fit the parts for as they may well price match the local garage and you'll have the receipts to show when you sell the car (always a good selling point).
Definitely use original parts though.

Vw menu price is £499 for belt kit fitted and £549 including water pump.
Genuine parts can be bought for around £120 for the belt kit and £40 for water pump plus £10 for genuine antifreeze.
I'll be doing my own nex year.

Well... contacted TPS to price parts up, seems fairly reasonable considering its genuine parts:
Timing belt kit £84.06 + VAT
Water Pump £34.44 + VAT
TOTAL £140 for genuine parts - VW charge £549 for belt kit + Water Pump change which translates to me as £410 Labour charge!. My trusted local garage where I have always taken my cars to inluding my previous BMW M3 convertible are charging £150 labour so saving £280.... crazy!

£549??? Mines due in January.
When I had my old Passat V6 TDI, I was quoted £900 by VW to do the cambelt on that. It is a monumental job as the front has to come off the car to gain access. Anyway, I found an ex Audi tech who'd set up on his own locally. I bought the parts from TPS for £160 and he charged me £100 labour. £640 saving for me.

Didn't they used to do a price match deal for older cars?
