Title: 1.8T reving when clutch down?
Post by: Carl18T on 12 September 2013, 21:32
Hi everyone, I have a mk4 1.8t 2000 running around 228bhp with APR maps installed and various other engine mods, when I give it some from first gear and go for second it carries on revving? Sometimes into the red? It did it tonight in 3rd as it started to spin due to wet roads? But really went into the red? i was giving it some at the time but sure it shouldn't carry on revving? Also it never does it when driving sensibly I have already fitted a new clutch pedal switch as thought it could of been that but still doing it.  Any advice would be appreciated..

Thanks Carl

sounds like your TB is sticking, when was the last time you cleaned it?

Hi thanks for that. I've only had the car for around 3 weeks so not cleaned it at all yet, but must say I've not thought of that at all so tomorrow it will be cleaned. My last 18t was a 98 so there was no TB.
Thanks again!

Try a full throttle run in 3rd / 4th gear from approx 30mph and see what happens. Does sound very much like your clutch  :undecided:  but cleaning out your TB is a quick and easy job; free too if you're handy with some tools

Hi again, sorry not been on for a few days.  Its not the clutch as its fine when accelerating pulls really well and no slipping at all. But if i rev it to much like say close to the red when i dip the clutch to change up a gear the revs just carry on going. Dont worry either ive lifted off the pedal.
Thanks again
Carl

Hi again, Im back from test run after cleaning TB which was not bad anyway, just a little bit of carbon around the butterfly, bad news is its still doing it. first and second if i give it enough revs before shifting up a gear? Went into the red before revs came back down the other issue with this is you cannot get it into the next gear until the revs have dropped enough.
Any further advise would help a lot!
thanks
Carl

Your TB cable driven or electronic? If its cable driven the cable could be getting stuck?

Could this be map related? I know some maps come with a brake and boost function.. I think how it works is similar to left foot braking, but the computer keeps the accelerator planted while you brake, so you still have boost ready when accelerating out of a corner. I don't really know the ins and outs but could be something to look into.

Thanks for all the help and thoughts. I've been scratching all weekend and still can't think of what it could be. I've had it plugged in as well but that didn't show anything apart from the stat so replaced that but knew that needed doing as it took ages to warm up. Thinking of taking it to my local VW Audi specialist psi tuning this week to see if they know anything.

Hi Harlemex I'm still trying to find out what's the cause of it? Have you got maps on your car? I'm trying to see if an APR map issue. Mine is getting on my tits now.

I've decided to stick a new clutch in to see if that sorts it. I have a feeling it is the clutch starting to slip but only when under high revs,

went to revo today told him issue he just scratched his head. my car has started holding back on boost and kind of juddering. He said buy a new air mass meter and get new plugs. The ones I have are only a few months old (denso europarts cheapies) the engine is fine at low revs, he said my plugs read upto .8 instead of a maximum of .5 if anyone knows what that means? He also said the maf was reading 40grams, and that was low???

Just 40gms?? Oopps!!!

To run 200bhp it should be reading approx 160gms when producing its peak power

Unplug it and see if it runs better   if it does its goosed

cheers Rhyso. seems mine is way off then  I just went for a spin with it unplugged and it felt the same. However when I plugged it back in and tried again it was as if I had a new car  For now (at least) it seems to be running ace. How weird??

Does it still do it when the temputure is half way at normal running temp, should not do it then.
