Title: Traffic Sign Recognition
Post by: CraigW on 12 September 2013, 20:05
Just reading through the manual again and on page 256 it talks about a traffic sign recognition display. For those that have their cars how does this work and where exactly does it display the traffic signs, i.e. is it on the media unit or in the instrument cluster display or both? It's just that I've not seen it appear on my instrument cluster display so do we even have it in this country?

I believe it had to speced as an option along with high beam assist... and therefore is not available on the GTI or GTD.

Do I mean high beam?  I might mean Lame Assist.  Whichever one it is you can't get on the GTI/D.  Think it is because the traffic sign recognition uses the camera this option provides.

That said can the sat Nav display speed limits on the MFD? Might be able to code it with VCDS?

Like Bill says its not on the GTI/GTD but on lesser models.

Ok so this really cool and useful feature is not on the top spec cars but on standard Golfs. That makes perfect sense VW

@ Bill, yes your quite right that the speed limit is displayed in the nav screen. I would just like to have seen the displays in the instrument cluster as well

I thought the exact same thing about the Nav system not being available on the GTI/GTD while it's standard on the GT! Which is why the first thing I told them was I wanted it thrown in for free lol.

traffic sign recognition uses a totally different rear view mirror. the camera recognition bit is built in to the rear view mirror. still don't know why it's not available though but maybe George k could shed some light on it.

It seems like another right royal f**k up along with others such as the nav being standard in the GT and having to pay £600 if you wanted a heated front screen

Yeah it is weird isn't it?  How many cameras are there?  Is there one there as standard or are GTI/GTDs not able to have any front cameras (and for what reason)? :undecided:

The MK6 GTI didn't have cruise whereas the GT it came as standard.
It does seem odd but I'm sure VW know exactly what they are doing to get the most £££ out of people.

Watch this space, a couple of years down the line when sales are slowing down, options such as the basic nav will become standard.

Hopefully people on here will have worked out how to spec this stuff in a cheaper aftermarket way by the so they'll have to offer it as standard.

Apparently, even the new R doesn't come with sat nav as standard

It's weird... on this vid at 2:29 you can see it on a GTI?

It's supposed to be part of the sat nav option according to the GTI price list....

There are two versions.  The sat nav has a database of what limits apply where and should display them on its screen.  You can have this on the GTI no problem.

Then, in a Golf (not GTI as its not available) if you spec the lane assist or whatever the option is with a front camera then you can also spec the speed limit detection which uses that camera to detect the speed limit and display in the MFD overriding the sat nav when they differ on the assumption the nav database is out of date.

I am unsure of:
1) The exact option required (lane assist or whatever) which gives the camera but isn't allowed on the GTI, if I could be bothered to find the brochure its probably in there somewhere.
2) If it is possible to get the sat nav database to display in the MFD without this option (i.e. on a GTI).  I suspect the answer is no.  With VCDS?  Maybe...

I did the activation of the Road sign recognition, but does not appear any sign ...
The MFD always displays this message.

Anyone have any tips ??

Do you have lane assist? As I'm sure you need the camera from that.

Looks like lane assist in the bottom right corner. You also need nav or nav pro for it to work.

So he does. The computer at work doesn't show pictures!  :undecided:
You're right, according to this link he needs Nav pro also for it to work

I think the folk at Briskoda have been activating it without

On the Golf you get this anyway if you have Lane Assist (which includes high beam assist).

When you tick Lane Assist though, it also adds the Nav Pro... which has to be because you need that to make it work.

Yes, I have Lane Assist function normally.
My car is a GTI with DLA + ACC + Discover Navigation Pro

Activated the Traffic Sign Recognition as forum: http://www.briskoda.net/forums/topic/299493-how-to-enable-traffic-sign-recognition/

So when you have Lane Assist and Nav Pro it doesn't automatically do sign recognition?

I thought reading the book it would do that.

I guess not, otherwise you wouldn't have messed around with the software thing like that Skoda forum shows.

There must be a reason why it wasn't enabled - maybe it doesn't know what the speed signs look like in your country?
