Are they Potenza S001s? This weeks Auto Express Tyre test rates them down in 7th position behind Yokohama Advans, Goodyear Eagles, Hankook Ventus, Dunlop Sport Maxx, Michelin Pilots and TOP ContiSportContact5.

I hope I get conti's there bob - on imo :nerd: seems like their is quite a mix of rubber coming thru , weird how vw don't stick to just 1 brand , surely they would get a better deal that way ?

Might be a supply issue. Maybe no one supplier can supply VW for all their needs, or maybe VW don't want to put all their eggs in one basket in case supply issues arise and VW can't shift cars because they can't source tyres. We have multiple suppliers of raw materials at my place of work, just in case a supplying factory burns down, goes bankrupt etc.
You could specify the tyres you wanted on a Ford Transit Van from a list of about 5, including 2 different winter tyre brands.

yip potenza S001 but I don't mind cause I prefer them to Dunlops. Would have like Michelin ps2 but you can't have everything

I'm not quite sure why everyone is so keen on the Bridgestones. If you have a look on tyre review websites, they seem to fare quite badly. The newer Dunlops (not the ones we see on the GTI) seem to be rated a bit better. Personally I'd prefer Contis or Pirellis, which also seem to be appearing...

The problem I have with Bridgestones is that come the time they are worn out and need replacing if you want to stick with the same tyres all round Bridgestones are going to be hitting you in the pocket quite a bit. For what they are I think they are too expensive IMO.
(This comes from experience, I'm currently running Bridgestones.)

If you get Pirelli's, you might want to monitor your front wear carefully. My current Scirocco came with P7s and they were shagged in 13k miles. They wore like the tyre was massively overinflated. The outer 25% on the inside and 25% on the outside had a healthy 6mm left when the central 50% was down to the 1.6mm markers. Tyres inflated to VW recommended pressures (as on the fuel flap). The rears are as new. I'm sure i'd have easily gotten 20-25k miles from them if they had worn evenly.
Other forum members had same issue, supposedly attributed to some geometry set-up error of the front suspension (car set up while hanging on arms at the factory). Couldn't find anything majorly wrong when it had a geometry check following a minor accident. Michelin PS3s have worn evenly since replacement. Hopefully it won't be an issue with the Golf, but worth keeping an eye on.
My Dunlop sidewall/pothole woes were on the previous Scirocco I owned

My brother needs new fronts on his Roc after around the same mileage with the same issue! He's getting another pair of cinturatos though, perhaps a change is in order?? :o

Well I've just ticked over 21k miles in my Rocco. Pirelli P7 self sealers from the factory. Totally even wear with 4mm on the fronts and 6mm still on the backs - still the original set.
Just hope I can get something similar with the Bridgestones ?

A definite change to avoid the same fate. Hope he hasn't already got his yet. Got my Michelins from Costco. They insist (annoyingly) that new tyres go on the back if you only buy 2 (the safety elves/jobsworths at work again). Obviously that was no good to me. I demonstrated that with the wear seen, I didn't want P7s on the front, but they would only fit the new ones on the back, so I had to swap my backs for fronts to get the new Michelins on the front.
It was an issue that VW didn't recognise (for the avoidance of replacing my tyres at no cost).

Hi all,
My 2011, 160 petrol scirocco had a very similar issue with the front tyres wearing badly with Pirelli p7s. As I knew I had the golf ordered, I put the from tyres on the rear and vice versa. To be honest, I wasn't too impressed with Pirelli.
I went to see my golf at the dealers the other day and its on Bridgestone, not too sure if there is any logic/pattern to what tyres are fitted at the factory.

Mine 19" Santiago's came with Dunlop Sport Maxx GT's (225/35 ZR19). Running the recommended 41Psi front & back... Seem a little excessive to me so may lower the pressure to around 38Psi.
Never driven on Dunlops before, but early indications are promising. Good feedback & turn in with very little road noise. Still running in the car, so haven't tested them on the limit or in the wet, so can't really comment on them with regards to high speed handling.

a lot of people don't like the Dunlop's but if they are good enough for a Nissan gtr then I'm sure they'll be fine for any golf.

So VW can test these cars for hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of miles and on a whim you know better than them what tyre pressures the car should be running on the road... :evil:

GTI on 18's came with Continental Sport Contact 2's, tyres are not a thing that the wife rips through on her cars only doing about 5k a year so these will probably last the duration of ownership!

Admittedly on a different car (Astr VXR running 235/35R19) I run mine at 32psi and they wear perfectly evenly right across the tyre. 41 definitely seems high.

These were standard OEM fit on the 19" Talladegas on the Mk 6 Golf R.
I found them pretty good overall and much better than the standard Sport Maxx, but I (and nearly all other R drivers) found that they did wear quite quickly. I'd keep your eye on the tread with them, and swap them round front to rear at a suitable point.

Bridgestones on my standard GTD.
They are sh!te in the damp for initial traction when pulling away. Couldn't manage 1/3 throttle pulling away from lights without tramping. Tramping again in 2nd at about 12mph under 1/2 throttle. Had no fear of sliding, just tramping in a straight line. Got 23k (and poor traction) out of my fronts with these on my MK5 - hardest wearing tyres I have owned on a VW. If I got an unfixable puncture i'd undoubtedly whip a 2nd tyre off for a spare and buy a pair of Michelin Pilot Sport 3s from Costco for the fronts.

Conti 2s are good tyres but an old tyre. I had them on my old mk5.
They wear fairly well and grip ok, a good blend of things a bit like a GTI.
Obviously the 3 and 5P have succeeded the Conti 2s so it's curious why they still use them.

Don't think anyone has had Michelins as OEM fit on a vew GTI/GTD. I would certainly lean towards Michelin Pilot Sport 3s as replacements from Costco. Excellent all-round tyre.
Had issue with my Pirelli P7s on the 170TDI Scirocco - the fronts wore very unevenly, almost as if the tyre was massively over-inflated. Central 1/3 hardly worn at all (6mm left), outer 1/3 either side of centre was down to the markers - at 12k miles.
Dunlop Sport Maxx on my Scirocco TDI140 were very susceptible to sidewall bulges developing off very minor pothole impacts in the cold. 3 tyres buggered in 1 winter.
Given a choice of OEMs fitted routinely by VW, i'd pick the Contis.

The 3 and 5P have succeeded the Conti 2s so it's curious why they still use them.
Because they're cheap, as most things superceded are (development costs as a proportion of the cost of the item long since spent up). The tread pattern on my Bridgestones look very dated, I can see why the wet grip is sh!te.

I did a fair amount of looking around last year when I needed a set, and I think I picked up the fact that the conti's are a very good all rounder for the money. So were Goodyear Eagle F1 AS 2 which I ended up getting as they were cheaper and been very happy with them. I tend to look wear, grip, noise when choosing and sure you can get very good tyres from Michelin and Pirelli but I think they will cost you more.

Yes I agree the michelin were amazing on my ed30 even after remap. I have conti 2s and there are sh!t in the wet. I have bought michelin sp3 for front.

My g/f has Bridgestones on her 120d M-Sport and in the cold and damp they are pathetic until you can get some warmth into them. Problem is on a rwd car getting warmth into the rear tyres is relatively easy... the fronts are another matter. Setting off from cold you go from rampant wheel spin (actually frantic flashing of the traction control light on the dash) even at low throttle openings which switches to terrible understeer once the rears are warm...
If my GTD is to come with Bridgestones then I hope they are better suited to it than they are to the BMW 1er...
I run N-rated Continentals on my 911 and they are fine, wet or dry... I can't justify the extra £300 per set for the Michelins which are supposed to be the best on the 911... maybe next time I need a full set, I'll make that investment now the old girl will be doing fewer miles with the arrival of the GTD...

Nope, the Bridgestones are sh!te on the GTD. The slightest bit of damp on the road and they will wheelspin if you give it more than 40% throttle pulling away in 1st. Also in damp conditions, giving it more than 60% in 2nd will result in wheelspin when you are doing 10-20mph. With these tyres on the GTD, VW's boasted "anti-tramp function" seems to be not working at all or maybe it's been set an impossible task with these tyres on.
They're not especially good in the dry either, but in any situation they are so much better warm than cold. Been driving my car quite a bit harder recently as you seem to be able to do that without mpg penalty once the car is run in and there is a big difference on grip once the tyres have warmed up.
If the GTD is capable of 0-62 in 7.5s with the Bridgestones on then you'd probably get it down to 7s with some Michelin Pilot Sport 3s on there as the 0-30 stretch would have a sizeable chunk of time knocked off with far better initial grip.

I've had it a couple of times (which I thought they'd resolved especially with the PP) - however, no where near as bad as on the mk 5 & 6, so I'm reasonably happy with it in this respect.

Thankfully (and finally) my GTD arrived this morning and is fitted with Contis... thankfully. I've only been for a quick spin (20 miles or so) and they seem fine, the car seems to be well balanced (it is cool and damp here) and grippy... but I haven't really been pushing it...

My car came with conti 2s. I have gti 230pp and tuning box. After adding tuning box you really get a feel for how bad contis are in the rain they are shocking the car is all over the place with the extra power with tuning box. I just bought 4 new michelin pilot 3s and stuck them on a week ago.
My god the difference in the car is unreal. In the rain you can really hammer it and you don't get that ridiculous wheel spin all the time in the rain.
I can safely say the best tyres for a gti by a country mile are michelin.
I had them on my ed 30 and conti on ed 35. Contis are unsafe in the rain with extra bhp.

Yes I agree I done nearly 18000 on my ed30 with michelins and remap and I hammered that car lol. And the tyres still had some amount of tread left on them. The dunlops I had on mk5 were done at 12000 lol. They were the worst for wear. Now I need to try and sell my conti2s lol not much chance after my last write up on them :smiley:

The first thing you notice when you change from conti2s to michelin is the lack of road noise. My g/f even noticed it and she knows nowt about cars lol. Even in the pissing rain the other night it was just so quiet with the michelins. :smiley:
They are leagues ahead of the contis in every respect.

Lol that's true :smiley:. Vw must be getting a really cheap deal with them as every vw I have had recently and has had bloody contis lol. :sad: just got my spare austin wheel refurbed and told the guy not to put the conti back on and leave it off.came back with the bloody tyre back on lol

When I had to replace the fronts on my Scirocco, I went with Michelin Pilot Sport 3s and they are superb, less than £120 a corner fully fitted at Costco, and if you time it right there is sometimes a Michelin promotion for a £50 fuel card too.

The Bridgestones are starting to spin more than a metal spinner top. Even with traction control off I'm getting spin in 2nd & 3rd.
Need 4x Goodyear Eagle F1's going on I think.

VW obviously do less research on their choice of tyres than any other aspect of the car. Bridgestones are sh!te in the damp and no better than average in the dry. Dunlops aren't a lot better in the wet, and from past experience, they are susceptible to tyrewall bulges after the most minor of pothole impacts. Contis seem the best of the OEM tyre choices but Michelins will outdo them by a long way.
Quiet, grippy in all conditions and longlasting - if the French made cars like they make tyres then VW would be in trouble. Wish VW gave you a tyre choice like Ford do on some of their vehicles, I'd happily pay £100 more for the car with Michelin Pilot Sport 3s.

The Bridgestones are so poor in this wet weather. I pulled off at the lights earlier and needed to get infront because I needed to get across to the right lane. The wheels just spun for ages even when feathering the pedal, I almost got burnt off by a Peugeot because of it until I regained traction, haha.

They really are the sh!ttiest tyres I have ever had from a "top tier" tyre manufacturer. Attempting to pull away quickly from a standing start in all but the driest conditions with these tyres just causes embarrassment - A fiat 500 twin-air 850cc with decent tyres could probably outdo a GTI or GTD with Bridgestones to about 15mph in the wet.
VW should hang their heads in shame fitting these 4 circles of hell on a £26k car.

The Pirelli P-Zero's arent much better in the wet :smiley: but they are supposed to be amazing in the dry.... I just need a dry road to test it out better.
I agree about the standard 18" Bridgestones thought, I have yet to hear a positive comment about them when it comes to the GTD/GTi setup :sad:

Same for me :-) no major issues after 2.5k miles ...need the dry to test properly though..

Hopefully I can wear out the (no doubt) Bridgestones that get fitted to mine before I come back to the UK!
That said, with a bit of luck I'll get some slightly better tyres on it from the start.

The climate and Tarmac surface of Cyprus roads will help wearing the Bridgestones slightly faster than the other forum members. Remember though, that after the summer you should change them. Cool weather after that amount of heat destroys the tyres. The Bridgestones will behave like wood-wheels after, say, November!

Should be okay as I'm here until the spring of 2015 and although it gets cold enough for a frost, we're still around 10 degrees in the day even in the coldest months. I'll deffo keeo an eye on them though.

Continental Sport Contact 2's on 18's. Done 160miles now. All I can say is - AWESOME!!!!! Makes me giggle and grin! :laugh: :laugh: :laugh: :laugh:

Is it me - or is it sightly weird that there are so many variations; from the now ancient ContiSport2's (released in 2009 and I've had ContiSport 3's since 2010 and ContiSport 5's from 2013), to PZeros, the Bridgestone S001's and the Dunlop SP Sportmax! :sad:
I've got a set of the Bridgestone S001's on another car and they're amazing on a warm / dry surface - but a little snappy if it's streaming wet and you're applying full power when the diff hooks up with some lock on .... :whistle:
In my personal experience the Michelin PS2 is a great all rounder (better than the PS3's under hard use) - but ideally the SuperSport is the one to try if you can get hold of them, like to go really fast and don't mind the price.
I think the "sweet spot" is probably going to be the Goodyear Eagle Assymetric 2's on a powerful front driver as they have a great balance and "feel" in either wet or dry conditions .... good traction and braking too. :smiley:

I have Continentals (Sport 2??) on my GTD.
No negative comments to make about them :)

Picked the Gti up yesterday and noted it had Continental Contisport 2's on it. Wouldn't be my first choice but we can live with them.
We had these from new on the wife's previous 2010 A3 Sline until I changed to Contisport 5's when they wore out. These were far better and available for £120 in 225 40 18 online.
As GiT1984 said, its strange that such old tech tyres are on a flagship model of a new tech car. No doubt down to cost!!

Picked mine up yesterday and it's shod with the Bridgestone Potenza S001s on its 18s. Too early to tell what they'll be like but my MkVI before had Goodyear Eagle F1 assym 2s all round which were a great tyre so the new ones have a lot to live up to!

My PP on 18s came with Conti's - from what I've heard (and had Conti's as standard fit on my Astra VXR) they're the better of the 2 and more than happy with them.

Are the others with P-Zeros on 19's too, or do some have 18's with Pirelli?

GTI with Austin 18s; Yokohama ADVAN Sport V105. Overall: Very well in the wet and a good grip on unsmooth/rough gravel. Noise is not so great and I can certainly start feeling the ground's grit on higher speeds. Thought I'd share as I haven't read anywhere on here that someone got their Mk7 with Yokos.

I had a talk with a dealer about this. Due to the extremely high tariffs we have around here, VW played it smart by sending cheaper tyres on all their brand new cars to cut down costs. Standards are 17s and they charged me around 1,800 pounds ($3,000) to install the 18s. The dealer stated that the wheels costed 600 pounds ($1,000) cheaper had I ordered them a week earlier. So yeah, taxes are so unstable and overpriced that they had to lower the specs of the standard GTI to make the price slightly more believable. BTW, Yokohamas cost more than twice as much as the Continentals would in the UK. My mistake for not specifying that I'm in the Middle East!

You want to trade? :grin: Used Contis would still cost more than any brand new Japanese tyre haha! I was actually going to order some through my dealer but I just went with the Yokos. I find them to be surprisingly well on the road and they proved just that when there was a really heavy rainfall a week ago. Maybe it's just because they only have a little over 1,500 miles on them but it was just remarkable how attached I felt to the ground. I live in the mountains so almost all the roads are inclined and there was a whole lot of slipping but I never lost my grip. Going down/uphill and through corners at 70 mpg easily! The FWD is also brilliant and the differential probably plays a role in this as well. (I wonder how much better the PP's diff would be!) So moral is, getting the Yokos is a good choice if you care about grip and feeling fastened to the gravel. But, if you care about comfort and road noise like I do, I am sure there are better options out there. My next set will definitely be something a little more comfy and would love to get some feedback on here on which ones would be best.

Apologies for the thread revival, but as I while away the months until my new GTI arrives, I've been wondering what tyres they're being delivered with nowadays on the 18" wheels.
I'm really hoping it's no longer Bridgestones. Hoping for either Conti Sport Contact 5 or Michelin PS4. Or the new Pirellis which did well in the latest Evo tyre test. Just not the Bridgestones, please VW.

The problem with the BS is that they are too hard at lower temps (under 10 Celsius) but I doubt if you ever see anything like that.
The extra hardness probably is good for you - stop the snakes and spiders making holes in them :-P

My GTD was delivered just before Christmas with stock 18 inch wheels. Came shod with..... .....Bridgestone Potenza's! :sad:

Considering how cold the temperature is any summer tyre will struggle not just the Bridgestones. I think people have over reacted way too much about the standard Bridgestone tyres. Yes they aren't super dooper Michelins and they take a few extra miles to warm up but so what. Use them and then come change time out something else on.

Thanks for the responses. Sounds like I'll be swapping out the tyres straight after delivery - most likely for Michelin PS4.
I'm in Hobart, Australia's southern-most and coldest capital city. I've had numerous Bridgestones on previous cars and am not a fan of them - especially in the cold and wet.
The way I look at it is that I'm stuck with them for a long time, so I'd rather pay up front to swap them out and enjoy the car from week one.
Edit: Out of curiosity, which Potenzas are the GTI's delivered with? S001, RE050 or RE003?

My clubsport came with Pirelli p zero’s, I know that because one just popped going over a pot hole!
I’m assuming that means it can’t be repaired and I’m in for £150 for a new tyre. The set is 11k miles.
