Noticed a knocking from passenger side wheel area so jacked it up today to see if i could see anything obvious or loose etc.
Turned the wheel which had some play in it, don't know if this is normal or not ? anyway when i span the wheel this awful sound happens so i uploaded this video for someone to hopefully enlighten me on this if possible.

I dont know what this is and it sounds unhealthy anyway!

Sounds like a wheel bearing is gone to me
-
Thats what i thought hearing the first clunking on there but theres no play in the wheel when i try twist it just when i rock it back and forth. And the loud noise after that sounds like its coming from nearer the engine :undecided:
-
A worn wheel bearing will give play when you rock the wheel
-
ah i see, since youve listened to the vid any idea what the loud grinding noise is when i spin the wheel ?
-
Hard to say really, prob just the wheel baring but could be the drive shaft?
-
Thats what i thought it could be but never heard that sound before so i couldnt tell, is it an expensive job to do a driveshaft
-
Thats what mine did when it needed a new wheel bearing. Try that first, it doesn't cost much, If I recall it was about £70 for it, labour included.
-
Ok i will thanks , still safe to drive is it ? Gotta go from grimsby to bournemouth at the weekend and its a long drive!!
-
I wouldn't advise it, any play in the bearing puts unwanted, extra strain on the entire bearing/hub. I wouldn't want to drive far. You could get a part ordered and have it sorted in 2 days. I'd advise fixing it before the drive. A wheel coming off will cost you a lot more than the bearing

^^^ This, get it sorted before making a journey like that!

and I've made a journey like that. Was only going 10mph in my old polo a few years ago.. wheel bearing gave way and the wheel just continued making a big escape from me. Luckily, me and other road users was fine. Get it fixed soon as possible

the last time mine went u couldnt feel much play in the wheel but it did sound like grinding brakes when goin round bends
-
that sounds more like a bad diff to me. have you checked the gearbox oil? could be the bearing but tbh Iv never heard one making that kinda noise before. use a long screwdriver with your ear to the end of it to pin point the noise.
-
I was kinda swaying to it being the diff as it sounds more behind the wheel rather than in it, but ill get a bearing done on the safe side then see if it still does it.
Had a dual mass flywheel kit put in 2 year ago would they of done the gearbox oil then ?
-
Whatever happens I would not drive that any distance.
-
no need to drain the oil in them boxes when you pull them out since the shafts bolt to the flanges on the outside. but I would check it for oil anyway. if your really keen you could take off the driveshaft and spin the wheel to check for noise. if it gone then your box is suspect. wouldn't change wheel bearing until noise source confirmed.
-
Yeh im leaving the bearing till i know what the grinding noise is because ive heard wheel bearings before and im not convinced its that, itll be in the garage next week so ill know more then hopefully.
