Title: New Daily???
Post by: Len on 05 September 2013, 12:32
Thinking about swapping the Passat for something newer.

Can afford to spend up to £5k

Been looking at an Audi A8 but not sure as they will be expensive to service etc.
Would still love a BMW 840 but not practical as a daily.
So looking at newer Passats.
Have heard that the B6 can be problematic.
Really like the CC but bit above what I want to spend.
So probably if I am being sensibel it will be a B5.5 and 1.8T and a visit to Hinkley!

A8 is a lovely car. Service costs aren't really that bad. 100k mile plugs on most and 5w30 oil so nothing abnormal.  Parts really aren't too bad even genuine. Spare parts are fortunes admittedly.  200 quid for a drivers door glass!

Autos are the way forward with todays traffic, especially in a car like that. My wife was adamant that she would never drive an auto, but that didn't stop me buying a DSG Passat. Now she says she wishes the red Golf was a DSG too.

Was the A8 auto being referred to.

Yes a manual M5 is an option, but not wanting the insurance premium or the danger to my license!

The search is now urgent as the Black Passat is virtually dead. (Turbo)

Good 1.8T Sports are thin on the ground though!

Nope! Heard bad things about B6's

I think with such a volume model it's hard NOT to hear bad things.

I would honestly take it with a pinch of salt and if you're willing to try buy a 12month warrantee with the car when you purchase it.

Certainly the early electric handbrake issues were mostly ironed out under the VW warrantee.

A good friend has an 850 csi which is basically an M8.
8 series is worth a look and an 840 has less to go wrong.
Really nice drive and a bit different
