Title: oil..short journeys
Post by: navmk4gti on 04 September 2013, 23:20
In regards to my v6 4mo.. i av 0-40w vw oil in there since last service .. 6k miles ago.. the car sounds very tappety when starting from cold...and recently i do a lot of short journeys.. 5 mile trip then 5 mile back home.

What grade oil you guys recomend? I was gong to go for 10-40 which is what vw used before they changed it to 0-40. Im thinking get it from opi oils this time but that lists 5-30 when i select my car.. so well confused.com now lol

Bit advice be good

could be the hydraulic lifters starting to wear or maybe getting gummed up. also were them engines not prone to oil pick up gauze getting clogged?

you should get the oil pressure checked first. if the gauze was restricted then the thick cold oil would struggle to get through it on first starts of the day. but when it warms and thins it would flow through the gauze easier.

But 0w 40 is the best oil from cold start it does not have to warm up to thin out.

I will get the lads at midlands vw to have a look at it to see if it is blocked. Is there any diy way to check oil pressure?

only if you have a gauge can you check the oil pressure. to check for gauze blockage the sump would need to come off. so I would get pressure checked first. surely the chain cant be gone at 62k?

Ah k will look into getting oil presure gauge fitte did want a gauge in the car anyway

Im going to go for 5-40 mobil oil which is 502 vw approved.  Will have to wait till then to see if anything is blocked if the sump needs to come off

Do you have a pair of stands and a jack?
If so do it yourself.
Use Synta platinum oil and fit a new pick up pipe/gauze. On these engines it's a must.
I Believe these engines suffer from sludge build up because the wrong oil is used at wrong intervals.
Use proper VW oil and change it every 5k.

I wish I'd have picked up a V5 or even better a V64mo instead of the 1.8t. Great engine you have there, and drivetrain.
