Title: Wheel balancing
Post by: Eeef on 31 August 2013, 16:53
So, need new tyres fairly soon for my Monza shadows.

I've still got factory tyres on so the weights are sprayed black, which makes them nice and discreet. Anyone sprayed the weights after getting a balance? If so, what paint?

Any decent tyre place will balance the wheels by hiding the weights behind the spokes. Thats what my local place does anyway

Surely they have to put the balance weights wherever the balance point is? Otherwise they won't be truly balanced?

Had silver weights on my glendales, so just purchased some black enamel paint and a small brush from Halfords 10 minute job and looks fine

My Glendales came with black weights - ultra discreet, took me a while to actually see them.  Just touch them in with black paint if they're not hidden

You would think so....

You can put balance weights behind spokes so they aren't seen and they will still be in balance because the machine should calculate the difference in width. Plus there isn't enough room to put them on the outer edge.

ah, when you say behind the spokes, do you mean on the inner edge of the rim, or actually behind the spokes?

Well the spokes on mine go straight to the edge so they would have to put the weights behind the spokes. Where there is no spoke the surface is radiused so they would stick on there for long.

In theory if you add more weight, you can counterbalance weights that have been put in the "wrong" place. i.e. (I'm guessing at these numbers but) if the machine said you needed a 5g weight at 6 o clock, right opposite the hole in the wheel where you would see it, you may be able to achieve the same result by adding 10g at 5 and 7 o clock which would be hidden behind the spokes.

Getting the tyre fitters to appreciate this level of OCD would be another issue tho'. I've only just got mine tuned into the idea of making sure the center cap is the right way up when the valve is in the 6 o clock position.
