Title: No assistance from PAS rack
Post by: wil892 on 30 August 2013, 22:19
Hi

I've just fitted a power assistance rack to my mk2 GTD. the rack is from a 16v corrado and I have used a mk3 uj to connect the column to the rack.
On fitting the rack and bleeding it, it was clear there was no power assistance at all. Bleeding was carried out by topping up the reservoir while turning the rack lock to lock with engine running.

Took the car for a drive, no assistance. I could hear the pump as a dull wurr, so I have changed the pump and bled the system, but the same thing happens.

Basically there is no difference in the rack feel when the car is running or not. It's very heavy...
Turning the wheel lock to lock with the engine running with the car on a ramp is nice and smooth.

Not sure if I should condemn the rack, it's a bit of a job to change it again! Any ideas? Thanks

are pipes connected the right way round? May sound like a stupid question but have to ask

Yes I'm pretty sure they are. The high pressure line goes to the union closest to the off side of the car, and return closest to the near side...
