Title: INSTALL FLY BY WIRE ON MK3
Post by: cts_casemod on 27 August 2013, 14:15
Hi all,

I need to install an electronic throttle (Fly by wire) from an mk4 on a Mk3.
Problem is the pedal bracket on the mk3 seems to be a single unit for all the 3 pedals. Has anyone successfully done this conversion? If so, how?

Many Thanks

Been done a few times. I know f17bad (aka kells) has done it.

Did it on mine, cut the accelerator pedal out and fabricated a bracket to mount the fbw pedal unit.

yep, did the same on my mk2, remove original pedal and custom mount new.

might be a stupid question... and proberbly something you have already looked at...
but can you not just install the mk4 pedals and mounting brackets?

Or a Golf3 TDI accelerator pedal unit?  Unless I'm mistaken they're FBW.

Yes although i'm sure it wont be compatible with the mk4 loom.

Also a mk4 pedalbox and mounting for FBW is completly different from a mk3,

Yes although i'm sure it wont be compatible with the mk4 loom.

Why would you be sure about that?  Check number of wires and resistance across travel on control circuit.  if it's the same for both pedals then you're on to a winner.

These things aren't designed to be difficult, so don't feel you have to make them hard

Try in then although removing a mk3 acc pedal is a b!tch

LOL

Can assure you this will NOT work

Tried and failed

The resistance is wrong. This is critical on the 20vt
Even the mk4 diesel won't work with a mk4 20vt

So install an inline resistor to bring it right.

It's not rocket science.

Now your just been silly..

If you want to do the job the correct way, then use the correct pedal
And don't cut corners.

It's not being silly - insert resistor, bring signal in line, use the part that bolts up.

There is more than one way to skin a cat, nipper.

A resistor won't change a range of resistance will it?

That will be a shift of resistance range and a bit if a bodge.

The trouble with them is the range is different.

It's not just 1k ohms less across the board, the entire sweep is different. No idea how to put it. "Range ratio" is the only thing I can think of.

As if by magic Brad brings in some people who he knows who know far more than he does.

Surely using your initials for your business is a bit off when you're just the mouth and polisher?

Lol whatever

U asked why it wouldn't work and I told you

Deal with it..

Next

If the resistance range is wrong (I assuming you mean its log) can the pot not be changed for either one from a MK4 or one or something else from Maplin/Farell etc. I would have thought the value would be printed on it.

Just thinking of other options if fabrication of a hybrid pedal box isn't an option.

No mate

If said person can't do the job then they should not be trying in the first place..

Really is not that hard to use the correct pedal and loom.

You keep the original pedal box anyhow, the accelerator pedal is the only one that needs To be changed
No need to remove the exciting pedal box

Mk2 u use the corrado item so while its out u could modify

Fair enough I've read your build thread so I'm aware you've done it.  Cant say I've even looked at the set up on a MK3 or 4 just trying to suggest an alternative route to investigate.

Not sure about pedal boxes being interesting though.... :)

Yea mate done it many times this is why I know.

I can see why problem would ask the questions

Certain people don't like to be wrong tho, which is daft
Because if they just stopped been a wan ker they might actually learn something, and that's not aimed
At u dude
