Hi,
I have a 140bhp gt tdi. Had the car for 3 months and love it. In terms of mpg I am pretty happy with it, although was hoping for a little bit more per gallon. I had a 2002 525d sport 5 series BMW and on a cruise to Inverness from Newcastle 570 mile round trip, using cruise control and staying at speed limits I would get 48mpg on average (circa 15 trips!). I have done this twice in golf and traffic levels the same with the same driving technique has returned 62 mpg on computer, although is actually about 57/58 when u fill up and measure it properly. This is some 10mpg short of official, I know official is always optimistic however given when I do the drive I use economical techniques (coasting in gear etc) I would have thought I should achieve mid 60 mpg. This is only about 10mpg more than the BMW which weighed a lot more, was 7 years older and only had 5 speed.
Does this suggest there is something wrong with car, or am I getting good results?
What are thoughts on remapping to improve response and mpg?
Cheers Gaz.

You can't seriously be complaining about genuine high 50's mpg? Those figures are around what I get on a decent journey without being deliberately frugal.
As for remapping? I have had my 140 CR Passat remapped. Driven especially economically it can produce up to a 10% improvement, but the odd use of the extra performance and all savings are wiped out. On the whole it hasn't saved me any money on fuel, but does make my smile wider from time to time.

Don't get me wrong high 50mpg is good, just thought it would be bit better giving the official mpg and other GTD forum members getting 60+ mpg. Additionally the fact that a 7 year old 2.5 diesel with a lot more weight managed 48mpg.
Think a remap is in order...so long as it doesn't put extra strain on the elements!
Cheers

BMW engines are among the best in the business so its no surprise you were getting good figures out of it
Official figures arent worth the paper they are written on. Its taken me DPF removal and remapping to actually get close to the 'official' figures.............
-
Don't forget that GTD owners talking of 60+ mpg's will be getting those figures with deliberate economy driving. Not a true representation of real world averages.

I'm surprised the mods haven't moved this thread to the TDI (http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?board=88) section?

sell it. buy a prius.

No just buy a BMW, my 320d after 15.5k from new has a long term average of 55.4mpg and regularly exceeds 60mpg average on journeys making sensible progress shall we say
-
Assuming that the OP bought a used car, the equivalent 320D would be significantly more expensive to buy in the first place, therefore wiping out the tiny financial saving on fuel the BMW would make.
Yes, it could be argued that the stronger BMW residuals may make it cheaper to own long term, but when you look at depreciation in terms of percentages (as most do), if the starting price is higher, the more actual cash it has to loose.

how new is the car?
If it was a new car it does take a bit of time to bed in. once it has, mpg can possible increase.

Only seriously frugal driving all the time produces calculated 60+mpg rather than displayed 70mpg. Try driving at 56mph on the motorway instead of 70mph and watch the mpg climb.
