Title: Stuff to buy for the Mk7
Post by: GTI7me on 24 August 2013, 23:03
So with it not being long until the pick up date now i'm starting to get the urge to buy things for the Mk7 already.

Would like some tasteful stuff that adds a little personality to the Golf.

Suggestions?

I wouldn't buy anything for it before you've got it, just in case VW piss you off to the point you look elsewhere.

I am buying a boot tray liner for mine, so my surf kit and wetsuit etc, doesn't get sand a salt water all over the carpet in the boot.  I will also probably buy a new plastic storage tub to put the wetsuit in and contain it in when wet.  I would also get official GTI Mats should they exist, which at present they do not.  Other than that probably new SD Cards to store my music on, a third spare key to take in surfing and a new Aquapac Diving bag to keep the key in.

I may also buy a load of new car care stuff.

Gone are the days of stickers in the windows, I like to keep things minimal these days.

Besides a Monza red richbrook tax disc holder, the only thing I would consider adding to my car, at a push, is a change of valve caps on the wheels to a gloss black to match the gloss black on the wheels, but doubt I'll make that happen.  Don't like any stickers of any kind in the windows, especially dealer stickers where I've specifically asked them not to bother.  My car isn't a mobile advertisement for my dealership!

If you buy those, you won't be able to fit the GTI/GTD tags onto the bottom of your keys - they extend the length of the key.

At the moment, I have just a forum tax disc holer, bootliner, rubber mats, mudflaps* and pentaglass planned for mine.

Its all functional gear to protect it and keep me enjoying it as I hack around the country for work :)

*I live and work where the roads are generally rubbish, and aside the protection I've found with my last 2 cars that these help with advance warning of grounding and such :P

I'll most likely put one either side in the quarter windows in the the rear doors like they are in my mk6.

What extends the length of the key? I thought the GTI/D part was just the bottom where you put a keyring?

I am 100% with you on this one. I can't stand dealer stickers or dealer reg plates!

Thanks for the great responses guys. I'm tempted by the RichBrook tax disc holder but at £20 it's fairly expensive. Especially when you think of all the tax you're already paying!

Yeah, I've also requested reg plates that do not have the horrible black section on the bottom showing the dealers name.

You can get the tax disc holder for £15, and for me is one of the few accessories that fits perfectly with the car.

My dealer is already throwing in a free metal VW keyring and a GTI pen...makes it all totally worth it!

Well I've got a Monza red one with a twist off back, £15 from here:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B003JI8B6A

You can get different colours and metal finishes.  Ether get one to match the colour of the car, or the red accents, or both if it's a red car!  It looks awesome against a white car though.

If you look closely, yes, you can see the sticky pads, but not really from a passing glance.  Those fake hex screws used to be real as that's how it was held together, but changing tax disc was a pain, so they made it a twist off back.   Each unto their own, I think it looks really nice in the car, and waaaaaay better than any crap the dealer sticks on the window!  Plenty of other styles to choose from though besides richbrook if you do fancy an alternative.

The VW dust caps are nice.

The silver ones with a blue VW logo?  I'm not keen on ones with logos on, and would want gloss black so they blend with the black of the wheel rather than stand out.  If you fancy ones with a VW logo on, search on eBay and you'll find ones that have a black VW logo that pretty much maches the one on the GTI key fob and the centre wheel caps.

That thermo mug is pretty cool though!

Edit:  To be fair, these don't look too bad...

Thanks for the response, so they will fit with the GTI key fob as the GTI part is detachable? I am interested as my keys are always scracted from being in my pocket with loose change etc.

That's great then, they will be my first present for the car, also sorting new music for the car. Then some forum stickers for the rear windows.

The longer the wait, the more stuff I'll end up ordering (So this could get expensive!!)

Aye, like I said before, I doubt I'll bother - plain glossy black ones might be OK, but being where they are, they get dirty anyway.

Still, £125 is a massive improvement over the Mk6 that was around £260 i think...

I really like mine. However i have the cloth interior. I still think it will look ace with the leather though.

I chose the black because i didnt want it to stand out too much, and i think the silver ones look a bit "corsa chav m8" haha!

It was £11.99 from eBay

It says up to 2tb with top tier SDXC card, 32gb max on a SDHC. Car will handle a 64gb SDXC card fine if formatted in ex-fat. (sent whilst semi-drunk from a day at the swim-up bar, evening session to start).

Pretty sure thats a 205 GTI font, but i know what you mean about prefering it, i had a look at these and the golf GTI writing wasnt even symmetrical, like so http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Genuine-Richbrook-Tax-Disc-Holder-Volkswagen-GTI-Logo-/271159553918?pt=UK_Car_Interior_Accessories&hash=item3f225e6f7e#ht_0wt_0

and this one is just plain confusing http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Titanium-Richbrook-Tax-Disc-Holder-Volkswagen-Golf-R-GTI-/190747525730?pt=UK_Car_Interior_Accessories&hash=item2c69704262#ht_1297wt_1399

so in the end settled on this one http://www.amazon.co.uk/Richbrook-twist-off-machined-aluminium-available/dp/B0095ZKD30/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1381142750&sr=8-1&keywords=vw+racing+tax+disc , which i am very happy with and will eventually get a matching induction kit to go with it

Does anyone know if the Oil Filler cap from the Audi R8 will fit the Mk7 Golf?

Why would you want to change the oil filler cap. Fair enough if the thing was visible but it spends most of its life behind a flap

why do we do anything? the r8 one looks nice than the standard VW one the same as the Audi cigarette cap looks better than the standard VW one.

That's debatable re the cigarette cap. I do not think its a nice part of the car at all so I'd rather it be more discreet as not to draw your attention to it which the Audi one will do with the chrome

Hence why some of us have GTI's and some GTD's, some with White, Red, Blue, Black, CSG etc.

Life would be pretty boring if we all liked the same things
