Title: Is this true?
Post by: Nino on 24 August 2013, 10:42
A friend of mine that works for slammed media was telling me that the golfs passenger rear wheel is tucked in 5mm more than the the rear drivers wheel, apparently this is to counter balance the fuel tank, he was telling me this because I was telling him I'm thinking about getting 3sdms 0.05 and he was saying I should use a 5mm spacer on the back passenger side. Is this true?

some cars yes, some no. Mine is slightly out but only by about 3mm and TBH it doesn't bother me

I noticed this on mine once I had my spacers fitted. Now I know why!

I always thought it was just due to wear of the bush. When I replaced my rear beam bush it went back to being even each side

I think it can be minimised by shifting the beam over on the brackets

^^This same as a mk3, the beam can be moved over if needed.

It is indeed true, my car is on air so it's even more obvious, I'll get a couple of pics tomorrow to reinforce it.

but why would vw bother doing something like that? yeah its noticeable but 5mm is not going affect handling much in the real world. sorry but not convinced on that 1.

They did it to counter balance the fuel tank :)

Here is mine:

You can also see how much more of the tyre is showing on the drivers side due to the arch sitting higher on the tyre because of the extra poke:
