Title: petrol needle fault? maybe sensor
Post by: tombsafc on 21 August 2013, 09:43
hi guys,

forever having little problems with my car! mk3 1995 gti, the petrol gauge keeps on sticking and when i get to half a tank, i will drive about 5 mile and the needle will drop to an 8th of a tank straight away! and then the person who i bought it off said that when it gets to the red, the pump cant push the petrol through when going round corners so chuggers away, how could i go about fixing this?

it's the sensor in the fuel tank attached to the fuel pump.It has a little board on it that a small wiper runs against as the float goes up and down as the fuel level lowers/rises.It's common that it wears out in a certain area as it tends to get more wear around the half tank to quarter tank area.Only solution is to replace it.

Be very careful doing this! I managed to break the pipe connection and that meant a new pump! So just be aware working around those 90 degree bend pipe connectors as the snap off very easily!
