Re my last post and my insurance problems, I find I have little choice but to stay with the insurance company which will offer up to 6 MONTHS overseas cover, so I am now faced with the problem of finding a suitable and economical tracker. My investigation of what is available has simply served to confuse me as, in particular, I have no desire to be committed to a commercial monitoring system because of cost. What I am seeking is a tracking system which I can monitor myself and which will satisfy the insurers. They have not stipulated any particular system or manufacturer and have simply said that they will be happy with any tracker which can locate the car in the event of theft. Anybody out there with experience in this area please?

Check these guys out

Thanks for link CraigW, however I've already checked them out and apart from initial cost they require an additional annual subscription fee of £149

There must be something simple that can be placed in the car that can be tracked.
Worst case scenario is you could wire up a hidden phone as phones can be tracked nowadays.
http://opengts.sourceforge.net/
What about this kind of thing (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Real-Time-Portable-Personal-GPS-Tracker-GSM-GPRS-Car-Pet-Dog-Tracking-Device-UK-/390592225995#vi-content) for £36
Or look for person / dog GPS tracking.

As it's at the request of the insurance company I assume they will have list of approved/accepted equipment.

I'm seriously considering one of these:

You can check it on your iphone via an app, i won't get it wired in though.

need to check if any insurers will discount enough to get the cost back first but looks good.

Thanks Jimble. I shall send details to the insurers and see what they have to say

As mentioned in my previous post I contacted my insurers and this is the reply I received.
Thank you for your email concerning a tracker.
If a tracker is needed for your vehicle, we do not recommend any specific one, only that one is required to cover you for theft or attempted theft.
I hope that this clarifies your query.
Kind regards

So you gonna go for the back to you one then mate?

Actually I've found what appears to be an identical unit on Amazon with 5 star reviews For£35 so I shall probably go for that

No tracker for me please. If some scumbag burgles my house to steal my car I don't want it back. Burn it out and get me a fresh one with the courtesy of the GAP insurance.

Hi Jimble,
The tracker is available via amazon.co.uk Try this link

Yeah I'm not sure I'd want to know the exact location of my stolen car and want it back either. Having said that, for those who do, that tracker from Amazon looks like a cracking deal.

The potential problems with the DIY / non-monitored / non-contract trackers to my mind are:
- Insurance companies may not recognise it as a "proper" product as much as a Thatcham approved or validated one and therefore not give a discount (or may not give cover at all if a tracker is a requirement)
- The PAYG SIM cards tend to have an automatic expiry if they are not used for a number of months i.e. if you don't actually call it or it does not call you then the SIM card can get cancelled. Simple enough to do a reminder on a calendar to make one call to it a month to get it to respond and therefore keep it "active" I guess
As with others, though, if the GTI gets nicked, I don't really want it back, I want GAP insurance plus normal insurance to buy me a new one (let's not go into lead time discussions on this thread though ...)
Can always use it to track the wife and monitor her driving habits though
