Title: Engine oil
Post by: Johnnyt88 on 20 August 2013, 02:11
Hi guys I've got 1.8 t 1999 needs a service, I was just wondering about the oil as on shell lube site it says 5w30. I can get 10w40 for practically nothing from work and was wondering if it would be ok??

Cheers for any help :)

It needs to be 5/40 fully synth for a 1.8t.

I was recommended to use: http://www.vwspares.co.uk/product_info.php?products_id=1354

I used castrol edge 5w-30 and had no problem. Runs like a dream.

I used this as I believe the previous owner used the same grade according to a top up bottle in the boot.

It is fully symthetic still 10w40 loads people from work said would be fine, it's got high mileage so 10w40 would protect a bit better??

I don't know many fully synthetic 10w40, if it is one it would cost as much as a good 5w40 so why not go for that then...

NO!

Go for a good 5w40 (on turbo engines I personally go for 0w40 even) and be happy... turbo is gonna thank you.

Nope needs to be 5/40 plus if you have no record of the pick up pipe being replaced I would get that sorted at the same time.

i ran the APU in my passat on 10/40 semi synth for long enough   it trundeld its way upto nearly 230,000 miles till some twit crashed into it.

gf's mk4  has now done +260K    185k of that has been on 10/40w semi synth.

oil and frount tyers @ 5 k miles
oil and other filters, brakes and rear tyers  at 10 K miles
usally seems to want clutch, coilpacks, suspention  at 50k  miles

gets the sh!t kicked into it daily  cant work out how the hell the thing is still going, very predictable on the serviceing but it's never actualy broken down yet

both petrol,  came the conclusion that 1.8T motors are really reliable once you have a spare and don't care if or are expecting it to pop  then they magicaly become indestructable.  spend money time and or effort on looking after them they seem to ether clog there oil pickup or drop a valve ether way renders them scrap

both those engiens were abused to hell on bargain basement 10/40 semi synth AC DELCO  mixed fleet oil
th enoticable diffrence was a lack of tappet rattel when cold and they din't burn any unlike 5-30,  only real differance is the 10/40 is going to be thicker when cold cost you a bit of fuel economy on cold engine but the tappets won't bleed down over night if there a bit tired
