As above was driving at 30MPH and oil light came on and revs dropped to zero. Tried cranking it 3 times, but nothing happens. So rang me brother to bring tools as I thought it's the ignition coil. I had a spare one in boot.
After 15 mins, just tried to start it whilst I was waiting for my brother, it started. Drove home and turned it off, then started it again, it started. Switched it off, tried for the second time, it refused to start. So took coil lead off and put it to the new one that I've got in boot, it started. Switched it back to the old coil. It starts again.
So I'm thinking could it be the coil? Or does the lie somewhere else?
Ignition coil is new, it's had a new crankshaft sensor out in less than a year old.

I'm going to run the engine on the new coil I have. See if it cuts out? If it does then the problem ain't the coil. It's somewhere else.
I'm not going to let this problem defeat me
will update soon folks

Intermittent problems are the best

Could be the fuel pump relay or the power supply relay or both lol

This.
Or just keep revving the car (stationary) with new coil pack. If it cuts out then i would change the relays

Bit of a head scratcher now tbh.
Despite knowing that the GTI has an intermittent problem of cutting out. my brother and i took it out for a spin
Parked in traffic and the car just cut out, tried cranking it, but starter did nothing. it didnt even make a noise. so we bumped the car, it started.
Drove home and swithced it off, tried starting it back up. but the key is only turning. It feels as though the starter isn't responding.
So we get the hammer out and wack it a few times as we though its the starter thats at fault. but guess what?? starter still not turning. so we bumped it again. it fired up.
Drove down road, it stalls. now car is at my other yard. coz i aint got time on my hand to mess about with it at the moment.
The car stalling and not trying to fire up has made it alot more complicated than the intitial fault of it cutting out?
When the key is turned and it does do nothing. its just dead. :undecided:
ANy sugesstions, going to get VAGCOM on it this weekend hopefully.

Ignition switch. Pretty simple to change. To test, unplug the wiring connector going in to the starter motor, and try starting the car using a wire directly from the battery to one of the pins (can't remember which).
-
Although I guess that might not cause it to cut out...not sure tbh! Was the crank sensor genuine?

Cranks sensor was bought from GSF. but i dont think its that. The symptoms dont show it could be that. will have to test each and every possible culprit once again. Damn

Just been to see the poorly 8V.
Brother said he started the car at 5:30, and it started first turn of the key.
So I've just tried to start it now, and it's dead. All light come on as usual. But as soon as I turn the key there's no mechanical sound.
I can hear fuel pump priming.
Just had some jump leads to see if battery is f**ked, but no. Battery is fine.
So need to check all fuses and going to get direct power from battery going to the starter. See if it fires up. Also going to hook it up on vagcom.
Once I get the car to start, then I can start to investigate the cutting out problem.
Wish me luck

Hold the key in the cranking position and put pressure on the key try wiggling the key whilst cranking

^^^This they wear over time and I had the same issue with mine.

Will try that and update you soon.

Right,
I've just unlocked the car, put key in, waited for abs and airbag light to self check itself and go out.
Tried starting it, nothing happens as said above, but when I turn the key, abs light comes on and I can hear fuel pump prime.
Any suggestions to what you guys think?

Wired the starter direct from battery and it didn't start. So my first thought is replacing the starter motor. Also scanned car for fault codes and it said "no fault codes found".
I remember now that a couple of month ago, I had to tap the starter for it to start engine, then out of the blue it cured itself. Now I rekon it's completely had it.
So first port of call, is to get a new starter. Hopefully it'll fix the problem.
Will update you folks.

Have you double checked your earth wires from battery to chassis and engine ?
-
I have this "intermittent" fault as well after letting the missus drive it...She overcranks the car and now the ignition barrel is sensitive at times.
Just do as suggested above and replace the ignition barrel and you will most likely be ok...:)

Problem fixed. Starts like a new car now. Will tell you all later what the fault was

Took the starter off, to get it re-cond. The "Starter Man" as we call him. looked at it and said the starter will be fine, your missing this "circled in the pic" below. He told me what its called but i forgot which is why i had to get a pic and post it up. So if any of you guys are having problems. You now know where to look
Its must have been brittle and snapped off.
