Guys
Since I blew the ECU on my old MK2 8v Gti I've decided to take it off of the road for the foreseeable future and so have bought a second run-about until such time I can get the golf up and running again.
Since I no longer need the golf I've decided that whilst it's off the road I might aswell see what mods are possible so need a little advice, links anything about either the 1.8 20vT or the 2.0 20vT transplant however if I'm gonna do it I'm thinking I might aswell make it worthwhile and also see about changing the drive to 4wd. Any advice or information eg. Donor cars etc. greatly appreciated.

think you have to cut up the rear floorpan to get 4x4. big job :wink:

4WD you will need to chop the boot in order to make it all fit. Not sure how you would do that?

The rear floorpan is coming out anyway to be altered for more ICE space as I don't use the spare-wheel for anything other than the odd spanner storage.
Was more looking for a list of donor cars for the transmission components, a mate suggested that the Audi A3 would probably be the best fit without too many alterations??
I'll be starting to pull the car to pieces tonight (weather permitting) so no mad rush for the info just yet but hoping to start the conversion in the next couple of months (subject to availability).

bit of a monster task retro-fitting 4wd .. btw, its the whole floor pan, not just the boot floor .. although that does have to be raised several inches.. so forget making space for ICE :grin:
a guy on clubgti 4wd'd his corrado while doing an R32 swap .. there's details and pics over there somewhere
1.8T is always good, by 2.0 20VT do you mean a bored out 1.8 ? or somehow fitting a 20v head to the 16v FSI turbo from the mk5 gti ? (pricey !)
as for donor cars.. you'd want either a rallye or g60 synchro for the pan/gear, or just a regular synchro for the pan, and dump the weaker synchro gear (wont handle high power)
anything 1.8T that comes in 4wd would be handy, so A3 quattro or octavia (i think they made some 4wd ones?) would be a good start, then you get the added bonus of the haldex system.

Not so much ALL myself but with a little help from my friends we're gonna give it our best shot.
One lad with a couple years mechanics experience, another with bodywork/painting expererience, myself who can adapt to most things but I'm mainly going to be working on the styling.
The trouble I always had with the golf is that I wanted to modify it but with it being my raily runner I couldn't afford to take her off the road :cry:. Now I can so I'm hoping that even though this is going to be a MAJOR project of 1-2 years at the end of it all it's gonna be worth it :cool: I love the mK2 :grin:
Tonight I begin to strip her down, removing everything from the engine to the interior and as much of anything else as I can. Basically the idea is to strip it down to bear shell, sand blast her and see EXACTLY what work needs doing to the body before even contemplating a start on the rest of the car.
Once it's been blasted and all evidence of any corrosion is removed it'll be a case of seam welding the whole car, giving her a full re-spray in a metalic blue (similar to that of the Boost chocolate bar wrapper) and then work can commence on the engine and transmission.
Gonna be one hell of a lot of work but as I said, I love the mk2 and I'm hoping to have the car for a fair few years to come.

Dont forget to take pictures every step of the way! Starting a project in the dub projects secion would be a good idea.
